Sunday Morning - 05/10/2003: Daniel Barenboim & Edward Said an apt sentiment for the WestEastern Divan Orchestra, founded in 1999 by the renownedIsraeli pianist and conductor daniel barenboim with Palestinian writer http://www.abc.net.au/rn/arts/sunmorn/stories/s959210.htm
Extractions: The orchestra is made up of young Israeli and Arab musicians who, thanks to their political masters, would never have had the chance to meet and understand each other if it were not for music. The orchestra has toured successfully across Europe. Their performance at London's Royal Albert Hall in August earned them a half-hour ovation. Our roving reporter Susan Shineberg caught up with Daniel Barenboim in Berlin to discuss this musical gesture of reconciliation. And Bloomsbury have published a collection of conversations between Edward Said and Daniel Barenboim, entitled Parallels And Paradoxes, in which they discuss Barenboims unprecedented move to play the music of the anti-Semitic composer Richard Wagner in Jerusalem in 2000, as well as their co-founding of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, a triumphant memorial to Said, who tragically died of leukemia last week at the age of 67.

Extractions: Artistic director of the Chicago Sympony Orchestra, who was hand-picked by Sir Georg Solti to be his successor during the 1991-92 season, will mark his 50th year of performing in the year 2000. Though he has been considered by some an erratic conductor, hs has nonetheless been an orchestra favorite, and is widely recognized as a nearly flawless solo pianist, and has continuously diversified the programs both at Orchestra Hall and the renovated Symphony Center, including new music, jazz, and international events. Barenboim recently renewed his contract with the CSO through the 2002-2003 season, though he will be taking a short sabbatical during the 1998-99 season to spend more time playing the piano (he recently recorded an album of Duke Ellington compositions for Teldec!). Born in Buenos Aires, Barenboim was educated in Israel, made his concert debut in Vienna and Rome in 1952. His conducting debut was with the Philharmonic Orchestra in London in 1967. In 1975, Barenboim took over as music director of the Orchestre de Paris from Sir Georg Solti.

Untitled Document CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GALA OPENING BENEFIT CONCERT OF CARNEGIE HALL S 112THSEASON daniel barenboim, Music Director, Conductor, and pianist MANUEL DE http://www.ffaire.com/pr/ch/open0203chicago.htm
Extractions: Carnegie Hall's 112th season opens on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. with a gala benefit concert featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) led by Music Director Daniel Barenboim in the first of three appearances in Isaac Stern Auditorium. The gala concert program includes Spanish composer Manuel de Falla's "The Miller's Dance" from The Three Cornered Hat and Nights in the Gardens of Spain with Mr. Barenboim as pianist, in addition to four Spanish-influenced works by Maurice Ravel: Rapsodie espagnole, Pavane pour une infante défunte, Alborada del gracioso, and Boléro. Mr. Barenboim believes that when programmed in sequence, these four Ravel works create a virtual Spanish symphony in four movements.
