From 1982 onwards, together with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle (who died in 1988) and the musicians of the Orchestre de Paris, he organised a cycle devoted exclusively to Mozart. In 1989 he resigned as conductor of the Orchestre de Paris in order to take over the new Opéra de Paris (at the Place de la Bastille).
