Extractions: David was born in Silver City, a small mining town in the mountains of New Mexico. He received his earliest musical training from the Sisters of Saint Joseph. As a child, David was fascinated by the human voice and acquired an old recording of a recital by the legendary soprano Lily Pons. He spent hours listening to this record and singing along. When his voice changed, what emerged was an extremely low range. After high school, David moved to Albuquerque and enrolled in the music school at the University of New Mexico, where he trained as an operatic bass. After a year at the University, he auditioned for the great baritone Igor Gorin, who taught at the University of Arizona, and was accepted by Gorin as a student. During this time, David also studied with the famous concert pianist, Ozan Marsh and was accepted at the University of Arizona with a full scholarship. A major portion of David's musical career has been spent in church music as an organist and choir director. David is currently the musical director and organist at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington. David is enjoying an active and exciting performing career as a pianist, singer, organist, and conductor. Recently, he formed his own record label, DGB Records. Romantic Piano, his most recent release, is exquisite piano music written by the greatest classical piano composers. Through DGB Records, David Barela is committed not only to creating beautiful music, but also to using that music to make constructive changes in all parts of the world.

I have spent a lifetime in the pursuit of excellence in music. My primary instrument is the piano but I devoted many years to the art of singing. I also studied and performed professionally as a dancer and actor. From the time I was a freshman in college I began my career as a church organist and choir director. Teaching piano and voice, coaching and accompanying students and professionals alike, have played a major role in my life. In 1998, I formed my record label DGB Records. DGB Records was my first exposure into the world of the music business. This résumé is an account of my pursuit of excellence in the performing arts. Fascinated by the qualities of the human voice, David developed a four-octave range which he applies to his exciting arrangements of well-known standards and to works of his own composition. David was influenced in his early youth by legendary soprano Lily Pons. He accepted a scholarship at the University of Arizona where he developed his vocal talents under the great baritone Igor Gorin, and he refined his piano technique which he developed from the age of four with renowned concert pianist Ozan Marsh. As a balance to the rigors of formal education, David performed in bars as a cocktail pianist and singer, where he developed the more spontaneous and playful aspects of his music. More recently David's musical life has focused more on his long-time love of ecclesiastical music. He is currently serving as musical director and organist at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington, where he is working on another CD of romantic classical piano music. One night last year David was listening to a recording of luminary South American singer Yma Sumac, who was known for singing with a four octave voice. David loved the concept, but his voice was two octaves lower than hers and no four octave sheet music existed. Thus his composition "Nightmare" was born, and while he was at it he adapted a prelude and fugue by J.S. Bach with his own music interspersed.

Extractions: Reviews Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses by Franz Liszt A New Recording of Seldom-Heard Works by Liszt - "Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses " An unusual recording of rare and seldom-heard works by Franz Liszt has recently come to light in a CD called Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses performed by American pianist David Barela on his own record label, DGB Records. According to Barela, these are pieces Liszt wrote in later life after he had taken minor orders into the priesthood. That they are contemplative and deeply introspective is not surprising, especially compared with the composers works of that time, and given the profound religiosity that inspired Liszt as a young man towards a vocation in the priesthoodfrom which he was initially dissuaded by his father. . These pieces are not the lyrical virtuoso piano compositions that one thinks of as music by Liszt, says Barela. They are song-like; its as if Liszt is forcing the piano to sing. Playing these pieces conjures up images of Liszt playing the piano in his study late at night, meditating and praying to his God. The first selection, Invocation, is a gossamer meditation inspired by a poem of the same name by his friend, the poet Alphonse de Lamartine, as was Hymn De LEnfant A Son Reveil and Andante Lagrimoso, based on Une Larme ou Consolation by Lamartine. Others include an arrangement of Ave Maria, Pensee des Morts, based on the De Profundis melody found in Liszts Tasso sketchbook; Pater Noster, a piano arrangement of a work for mixed chorus and orchestra; and Miserere DApres Palestrina.
