Extractions: Pianist Emanuel Ax to Give Master Class at Smith College World-renowned, Grammy award-winning pianist Emanuel Ax will conduct a master class at Smith College at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, in Sweeney Concert Hall, Sage Hall. The event-which is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis-will begin with Ax offering a musical critique to performing students followed by a question and answer period. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Ax, who will be performing later in the day at a WFCR Radio fundraiser at the Calvin Theater, is known in equal measure for his concert, chamber and recital performances. Highly regarded for his poetic lyricism and brilliant technique, he first gained the attention of the classical music world in 1974 when, at the age of 25, he won first prize in the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. Devoted to chamber music, Ax regularly performs duo recitals with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, their recordings together earning them three Grammy awards. He also plays regularly with Isaac Stern, Jaime Laredo, and his wife, the pianist Yoko Nozaki, with whom he'll be performing at the Calvin Theater. A concert pianist in the grand tradition, he has tried his hand, or rather his hands, at the period piano and the organ, with drastically different results. Ax, 51, was set to perform Copland's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra along with Brahms' formidable Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this weekend, but pulled out of the organ piece. "The reason was that I really am not prepared to do it," he says apologetically, but honestly, over the phone. "I have never played organ. I listened to the piece and I really wanted to play it ... I just didn't realize what was involved. You have to set the organ up correctly and you have to play with your feet, which I didn't think that you had to with this piece." It wasn't long before Ax knew he would have to call it off. "I suddenly panicked and thought, Mariss [Jansons, PSO music director] is going have a fit and it is going to sound horrible. I better just call up and say, 'Look, get somebody who knows what he's doing.' " The PSO did just that, bringing in Yale organist Thomas Murray for the Copland.

Highly regarded for his poetic lyricism and brilliant technique, he first won the attention of the classical world in 1974, when at the age of twenty-five he took the top prize in the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. He has been a busy and respected figure on the international concert scene ever since. An exclusive Sony Classical artist since 1987, Ax has recorded for the label a wide range of concert, chamber and solo piano music, from Classical works to twentieth-century music. His most recent Grammy Award-winning recordings for Sony Classical include the first volume in his ongoing cycle of Haydn piano sonatas and a disc of the clarinet trios of Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart (with Yo-Yo Ma and Richard Stoltzman). Los Tangueros, a recent Sony Classical recording, represents a striking departure for Ax, in which he collaborates with pianist Pablo Ziegler in new two-piano arrangements of tangos and milongas by Astor Piazzolla. Ax recently completed his first period-instrument recording for Sony Classical, playing the Chopin Piano Concerto no. 2 on an 1853 Erard piano. Future plans include recording the first Chopin piano concerto, also on period instruments, and the Brahms Piano Concerto no. 2 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Bernard Haitink.
