... Read more Asin: Subjects: 1. Gebraucht - Klassik - Interpreten - Instrumentalisten - Pianisten 2. Return Home ALEXANDER TCHEREPNIN ALEXANDER TCHEREPNIN (1882-1949): Sinfonia Sevillana, Op. 23, Evangelio, Op. 12, El Castillo de Almodóvar, Op. 65, Ritmos (Fantasia coreografica), Op. 43. A disc of rare orchestral music adds two CD premieres to the catalogue: 1915's Evangelio ("Gospel"), an early tone poem and El Castillo..., an orchestral transcription of a 1931 piano piece which describes an Andalusian landmark in three richly sonorous, melodious and colorful movements. The rarely recorded "symphony" (1920) is a tone poem also, whose three movements depict the city of Seville in all its vibrancy and brilliance as well as its relaxed grace. Ritmos is a dance fantasy from 1928 which depicts a march from the darkness of night to the dazzling Spanish sunshine of full daylight. Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria; Adrian Leaper. ASV DCA 1066 (England) AUGUST DE BOECK (1865-1937): Cello Sonata, Cantilena for Cello and Piano, JEAN-LOUIS NICODE (1853-1919): Cello Sonata No. 2 in G, Op. 25. De Boeck's 1894 sonata was only discovered a few years ago by the pianist on this recording and its youthful lyricism is reminiscent of Grieg and Franck. Nicode was a German, better-known as a concert promoter whose sonata dates from1882 and is again under the influence of Grieg: grandiose, lyrical and noble - a substantial addition to the limited repertoire of late romantic cello works. Extractions: Pachelbel, Easter Cantatas La Capella Ducale, Musica Fiata, Roland Wilson LP, CPO Cantatas, you say? You thought he only did the Canon and Gigue and you've heard that once too many times? Never mind. Some of us don't tire of the Canon even if our patience is sometimes tested by bored variations. Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was very popular in his time but almost immediately after his death, fell out of fashion. The revival was not long in coming though, and Johann Mattheson in his essay from 1740 gives us most of the details of his life that we now have. The cantatas on this recording were said to have influenced Bach, and you can certainly hear how they might have. Stately, elegant, comparitively simple, with lilting vocal lines and a sense of the ancient in some of the instrument parts, this is pleasure with a big "P". (Count K) Rameau, Regne Amour: Love songs from the operas Carolyn Sampson, Ex Cathedra, Jeffrey Skidmore LP, Hyperion Jean-Phillipe Rameau (1683-1764) was one of the fathers of the teaching of harmony with his Traite de l'harmonie published in 1722. One oddity of his career is that he was fifty before his first opera was performed. This series of love songs come from the Divertissements of the French opera which was to have a break every so often that might comprise dance or arias: the idea being, that the drama would not be overburdened by too much singing. This whole idea had been put into practise first by Lully. Whether or no you consider Lully and Rameau to be dogs of conservatism (you can make them run if you like), this is very lovely stuff. (Count K)
Extractions: I was unaquainted with Messiaen before borrowing this cd at the local library, and this accessible, yet difficult work served as the trigger for my interest in one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The 20 regards vary immensely in character, from the tranquil "Regard du Pere"(Glimpse of the Father) to the violent, barbaric "Par lu tout ete fait"(behold, all that summer has made). People who normally have prejudices against modern music(and there are many, trust me), are more likely to be open for it after hearing Vingt Regards, which is devoid of serialism, a definitive turn-off for the common ear. Austbo is a fantastic pianist, and delivers a flawless recording, bursting with emotion and technical brilliance. The quality of the recording itself is great, and it is a pleasure to listen to. The feeling of quality permeats this cd, a rarity from Naxos, not the most respected label around.

Extractions: The USQ is one of the leading Dutch string quartets and has enjoyed a growing international reputation as a dynamic and versatile ensemble. Bringing rediscovered and forgotten pieces back into the concert halls is one of the main focuses of the USQ. The four players strongly believe in the combination of the "classic" repertoire with the unknown, surprising and fascinating rediscoveries of the times between the wars and revolutions (1880-1950) where composers and artists that did not meet the taste of the governments had to fear for their lives, had to leave or hide and were forgotten. Even a century further in time there still has to be done a lot of discovering! The members of the USQ have studied with Philip Hirschorn, Lawrence Dutton, Nobuko Imai, Aldo Parisot, Viktor Liberman and with the Amadeus, Emerson and the LaSalle Quartets. Their repertoire encompasses more than two centuries of quartet composition, ranging from the quartets of Haydn to the most complex works of the avant-garde. In the Netherlands the Quartet is regularly to be heard in all major concert halls including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Vredenburg Utrecht and the Muziekcentrum Eindhoven. In 1996 the USQ was invited to play before Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, at her palace in The Hague. Also because of the content of the repertoire the Quartet performs regularly at the major national and international festivals all over Europe and Australia. Every year new compositions are dedicated to the quartet. The USQ has recently played with mezzo soprano Carolyn Watkinson, cellists Dmitri Ferschtman, Michael Stirling, Miriam Kirby, violist Vladimir Mendelssohn and Asdis Valdimarsdottir of the Chilingirian Quartet, doublebass player Quirijn van Regteren Altena, pianist Hakon Austbo, saxophonist Arno Bornkamp, oboist Pauline Oostenrijk, clarinettist Kari Krikku, and the North Netherland Symphony Orchestra.

Extractions: True, the Russian composer Alexander Skryabin (1872-1915) was far ahead of his time. Not only was he an important innovator of the musical language and did he conceive a wholly new approach to tonality. He also made the first attempt in history into the multimedia field. The score of his op. 60 for piano solo, large orchestra and choir, includes a two-voiced part, luce, consisting of notes (pitches) without any further indications. Historical sources prove that the composer supposed the use of a colour keyboard, an instrument that had been constructed in 1895 by the British scientist Wallace Rimington. It is also known that Skryabin possessed the synaesthetic ability to associate the hearing of a certain sound with a certain colour. Thus he made his own scale of colours where each pitch in the circle of fifths is represented by its own, specific colour.
