Interdisciplinary Categories Vladimir Ashkenazy (sometimes transliterated Ashkenazi ) (born July 6 conductor and pianist Graduate of the Moscow Conservatoire ; he won the prestigious Chopin competition in Warsawin and shared first prize in the Tchaikovsky InternationalCompetition He is noted for his interpretation as a pianist. In 1998 he became Principal Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra Before he turned to conducting, Ashkenazy recorded much of the standard repertoire. The high point is his early Chopin etudes (BMG/Melodiya 33215). This is perhaps the most successful set of this music onrecord, integrating flawless technique with understanding and emotional depth. His later complete Chopin piano music isconsistently good but rarely reaches the same heights of inspiration (Decca 421185). He has also recorded sets of Beethoven sonatas (Decca 425590) and Mozart piano concertos; these are solid but not exceptional (Decca 425557). Although Ashkenazy now rarely records solo piano music, two recent items are worth hearing.

A small orchestra is called a chamber orchestra Full size orchestras may sometimes be called "symphony orchestras" or "philharmonic orchestras"; these prefixes do not indicate any difference either to the instrumental content or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different orchestras based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
Extractions: VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY Legendary pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy is a musician of great seriousness. He believes in music absolutely. Artists will produce art even when life as an artist becomes difficult, because "that's the way they're born, it's their vocation, their meaning of life", he recently told Brisbane's Courier Mail Earlier this year he resigned his position as musical director of the Czech Philharmonic because he felt he had been let down by the orchestra. "In five years I gave them all my heart, but I have a very strong feeling that I got very little response," he said at the time. Ashkenazy grew up in Russia studying at the Moscow Conservatoire. He came to international attention in the late 1950s through his prize-winning performances at a number of international piano competitions. He escaped to the west at the age of 26 after trips back and forth to London on tour. His experience of growing up during the oppressive Stalinist era and his complex relationship to his homeland is something that he often refers to in interviews. It has obviously influenced him profoundly but this is not to say that his music is without joy. Quite the opposite. Music has become for him a solace, a utopian prism through which to endure the world. He ends his memoir Beyond Frontiers with a philosophical reflection about truth and music and its ability to help us navigate change.

Extractions: Ravel Rhapsodie espagnole In the Janacek's Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen , Vladimir Ashkenazy did not seem to be really conducting or leading the orchestra; he had no sense of the dramatic contour of the work, sounding as it did so totally disjointed and uncoordinated. A disappointing start to the evening. Things improved somewhat with Ravels Piano Concerto in G, played with great passion and precision by Helene Grimaud; this wonderful pianist combines great intelligence with a dazzling technique, her incredibly nimble fingers making short work of even the most difficult arpeggios. Unlike her conductor, she had total control, flare and rhythmic vitality. Unfortunately, sometimes her playing was engulfed by the hall's notoriously dry acoustic, and on occasion even drowned out by the orchestras excessively loud playing, due entirely to Ashkenazy's bombastic conducting. Being a renowned pianist himself, fellow feeling at least should have produced a far more sympathetic and sensitive accompaniment.

Usually those who manage the more athletic pieces come up short in poetry in the quieter ones, while the fingers of those adept at evoking the tints and colors in these tone poems have sounded awkward when the pace quickened. Good versions of these works are not scarce, but great ones are exceedingly rare. Artur Rubinstein never recorded the set, though he did record the

Extractions: Oh yes the perfect modern pianist, fantastic technique, giant reportorie, well practiced and all his playing sounds just like the music is written. Yep, sounds just like a machine pounding out "perfect" notes on a keyboard. No wonder Classical piano is a dying art form, because with the likes of a "cardboard piano robot" like Ashkenazy, the real feel of the music is completely lost. Why is this supreme typist so excessively recorded? fits well into the Disneyland mentality of our capitalist system I suppose. May as well listen to a wind up toy.
