Extractions: Vladimir Ashkenazy has agreed to be Honorary Chairman of the Greater Princeton Steinway Society. "It is a worthy cause. I hope I can be of help to your wonderful activities. Steinway is the only piano on which the pianist can do everything he wants and everything he dreams," said Ashkenazy in accepting the chairmanship. A premiere pianist, chamber musician and conductor, Ashkenazy graduated from the Moscow University and won top prizes in the Chopin, Queen Elisabeth, and Tchaikovsky competitions. A guest conductor, Ashkenazy has appeared with many of the world's major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Concertgebouw. He recently conducted concerts in Carnegie Hall with the Deutsches Symphony-Orchestra Berlin, the Kennedy Center and at the Salzburg Festival. His many recordings with Decca Records include the complete sets of concertos and other works of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Scriabin. The Grove Dictionary of Music describes his pianism as, "the finest of the younger pianists. His playing combines intellectual probity with warmth and sincere feeling, and is marked by exceptional sensitivity to tone colour and delicacy of fingerwork."

I hadn't realized it at the time I bought this disc (actually, it was a cassette, and I later bought the disc while stationed in Germany when the tape wore out), but I was being set-up for an education in "how to properly appreciate Sibelius." I bought these superb recordings at the Camelot Music store at a mall in Lynchburg, Virginia (a seemingly most improbable place) in 1983 while driving from my parents' home in West Virginia to Alabama, to attend my Army technical school, right off Christmas furlough and right out of basic training. Prior to purchasing this cassette, I had only previously been exposed to Sibelius' Second Symphony (A 1950's RCA "Living Stereo" record of Monteux/London Symphony, which I adore to this day) and his Fourth (a symphony which I would not fully appreciate yet for a few years) and the Jenson/Ormandy Violin Concerto . I bought the tape because I admired Sibelius' Second and Violin Concerto so much. At the time, I was only familiar with Ashkenazy as pianist, so it was a curiosity to me to see him on the cover, baton in hand.

Perhaps it is for the better, since he has done decent work with the orchestra (his Sibelius symphonies, for instance). In an interview with Polish pianist Janina Fialkowska, she named the two pianists with the most infallible fingers: Pollini and Ashkenazy. Everyone else is just human. Recommended listening: BACK

In 1998 he became Principal Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra edit Before he turned to conducting, Ashkenazy recorded much of the standard repertoire. The high point is his early Chopin etudes (BMG/Melodiya 33215). This is perhaps the most successful set of this music on record, integrating flawless technique with understanding and emotional depth. His later complete Chopin piano music is consistently good but rarely reaches the same heights of inspiration (Decca 421185). He has also recorded sets of Beethoven sonatas (Decca 425590) and Mozart piano concertos; these are solid but not exceptional (Decca 425557). Although Ashkenazy now rarely records solo piano music, two recent items are worth hearing.
