Classical Net Review - Great Pianists Of The 20th Century stand are Martha Argerich, claudio arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus The Argerich, arrau, Backhaus, Gilels, and Haskil Backhaus set preserves the pianist s 1954 Carnegie http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/p/phi62699a.html
Extractions: Selections from the Definitive Collection th Century. The series is scheduled to be released in ten 2-CD sets each month over the next year. (December 1998 and July 1999 will be vacation months.) With two exceptions, each set will be devoted to a single pianist. Many pianists will be represented by two of these sets; some (Arrau, Gilels, Kempff, Richter, Brendel, Horowitz, and Rubinstein) will be represented by three. In all, 72 pianists will be included in this project, which is unprecedented in the history of recordings. Is this typical of the actual releases? Philips sent me a release sheet on the first ten. I hope to review at least some of these in greater detail, but I can give you an overview here. First up on the reviewing stand are Martha Argerich, Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus, Alfred Brendel, Julius Katchen, Emil Gilels, Clara Haskil, Vladimir Horowitz, Wilhelm Kempff, and Stephen Kovacevich. The Argerich, Arrau, Backhaus, Gilels, and Haskil discs present them in one or more concertos. The solo pieces are, for the most part, substantial. For example, the Kovacevich discs consist solely of Beethoven sonatas, and the Backhaus set preserves the pianist's 1954 Carnegie Hall recital in its entirety. Overall, some of this material is new to CD; some of it hasn't even seen commercial release before. Like everybody else reviewing this project, I imagine, I feel compelled to comment on who has been left out. Where is Tatiana Nikolayeva and her wondrous Bach? Grigory Sokolov? Evgeny Mogilevsky? ("Aha," the astute reader thinks, "I see a pattern.") Well, it doesn't really matter, because this is a great project because of its sheer daring, and it should give pianophiles plenty to listen to and talk about over the next year.
Extractions: BEETHOVEN: COMPLETE PIANO SONATAS Claudio Arrau BEETHOVEN: SONATAS Maurizio Pollini The great Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau once said that in the metaphysical language of the late Beethoven sonatas "trills become a trembling of the soul". He was also fond of reminding his listeners that Beethoven, in his existential struggle, was a contemporary figure. For him, Beethoven stood for the "spirit of humanity victorious". "Beethoven's message of endless struggle concluding in the victory of renewal and spiritual rebirth, speaks to us and to young people today with a force that is particularly relevant to our times. In the sense that his life was an existential fight for survival, Beethoven is our contemporary. In the sense that he mastered both his life and his art to reach the ultimate heights of creation and transfiguration, he will last as long as the human spirit prevails upon the earth," he wrote in an essay to accompany his first series of Beethoven sonatas. Arrau was left grasping for words to describe the power of Beethoven to affect something very deep within the listener. The metaphysical, essentialist language may not be to contemporary taste but poetically such description is reaching, just as the music reaches, past what we know easily towards what we experience intuitively. Arrau's characteristic lush, rich, fully textured pianistic sound has a type of grandeur that befits such description. If Arrau does not evoke a trembling of the soul, then he most likely will evoke a deep visceral reaction of some other kind. This seems a given from the sheer sonic power of his deep rich chords. Perhaps more than any other pianist Arrau has a distinctive recognisable sound.

Liszt: Etudes (12) D'Execution Transcendante:Lots Of Good Music (Classical) Customer Reviews. Average Rating Rating Transcendental Music This album is the best showcase for pianist claudio arrau, a pianist who is not as well known http://classical.lotsofgoodmusic.com/us_classical-item_id-B0000040Y5-search_type
Extractions: This album is the best showcase for pianist Claudio Arrau, a pianist who is not as well known as Horowitz, Glen Gould or Alfred Brendel, but who is extraordinary. The Transcendental Etudes are no picnic to play on the piano. The virtuosity needed for the polyphonic music calls for rapid raise in octaves, daring leaps and dexterity, usually of the left hand. It's a great work out for an ambitious pianist. Emotional, dramatic and intense, the music of Liszt has never been greater than on this recording which was originally an LP in the 70's. On the cover is the artist himself, Franz List.
Extractions: Comment : How come we have such a repertoire? Why these pieces and why in such an order? And why together with Solomon? The availability of the films is of course a major consideration. But then why in such an order? The quality of these films has a lot to do with such an order. The first one is the best, both in sound and in vision. The collaboration with the orchestra was wonderful, in rhythm and in musical effects, everything. With Arrau, it is a standard thing. His power to unify large scale structures and to cumulate paces for dramatic effects are amazing, and these are all on top of a most beautiful tone and perfect phrasing. Depiction of his hands comes only occasionally. What we have is somewhat like what you see when you attend a concert. But his interpretation is the very best one could ever hope foras perfect as perfection itself. Like very old and pure cogniac, it's always contained within an old bottle. The sound and visual qualities of the second piece is not so good as the first one. The speed of filming was not fast enough and when the tempo is fast, the vision of his hands, particularly his fingers is blurred and the higher notes are slightly distorted. But as far as music and interpretation is concerned, like the first piece, they are very instructive indeed. Here we have the subtleties of rhythmic flexibility and tone colouring of the highest degree.

Extractions: One gets a fair semblance of Arrau's artistry through a remarkable cache of recordings made for German Radio in 1937 and 1938. They are released here for the first time, with the exception of the Liszt E Flat concerto, which appeared on a long unavailable Russian Melodya LP and two rare commercially issued Parlophone 78s, added as encores. While Arrau made several important recordings prior to his emigration from Germany, his pre-war discography is small in comparison to his prolific output from the mid-forties on, when the pianist's international reputation solidified. The present compilation, therefore, adds significantly to what we know of Arrau's prime years. CD-1060(2) CLAUDIO ARRAU In Germany. Beethoven: Piano Sonatas - Ludwig Van Beethoven , Claudio Arrau claudio arrau is not always an easy pianist to listen to. His playing is sometimes very irritating and at times can seem boring. http://www.classicalmusicreview.com/Beethoven_Piano_Sonatas_B00000411Z.html
Extractions: Claudio Arrau is not always an easy pianist to listen to. His playing is sometimes very irritating and at times can seem boring. Not everyone will agree with his Beethoven playing, and his playing in general, but many will be fascinated by his complex intellectuality. His Beethoven playing, particularly the sonatas, are some of his best and most interesting work. If anyone was to own one recording of Arraus playing, I would surely suggest a Beethoven recording. His interpretations of these three popular sonatas are unorthodox but are given very passionate and interesting performances. Anyone studying or interested in these sonatas should listen to Arrau, the Appassionata especially is given an excellent performance. This CD is highly recommended, its an excellent lesson in Arraus Beethoven playing.

The series will highlight the influence of Bach and Liszt in shaping Busoni's highly original synthesis of the classic, the Romantic and the avant-garde. Mr. Ohlsson's 2001-2002 season was marked by a return to Carnegie Hall in an imaginative recital that juxtaposed the music of Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn with two works by John Adams, including the world premiere of American Berserk , written especially for Mr. Ohlsson. Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times wrote that, "Mr. Ohlsson, in top form, played with relaxed virtuosity and musical élan." contact mailing list site map

Extractions: Culled from various TV appearances 1959-1964, this assemblage of Great pianists makes fascinating viewing, a visual and auditory delight that bring back cherished memories of keyboard idols and giants in repertory in which they flourish. They video mixes solo and collaborative performances by the artists. Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1902-1991) opens with the last movement of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto in solid, Prussian style, befitting Arrau's German pedagogy. Jorge Bolet changes the mood considerably, rending up a suave interpretation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue under one of the composer's acolytes, Paul Whiteman. The most beguiling moment comes when actor Burgess Meredith introduces the fifteen-year-old Lorin Hollander (b. 1944) to play Chopin's popular waltz in C-sharp Minor, then the piece that had got the New York critics agog, the last movement from Saint-Saens' "Egyptian" Concerto. More Saint-Saens from Philippe Entremont (b. 1934) in the familiar C Minor Concerto, the finale, with its durable cross between folk tune and church hymn. The last two American pianists, Byron Janis (b. 1928) and Grant Johannesen (b. 1921), each get two concertos: Johannesen has the last movement of the Gershwin Concerto in F and a silky opening movement from the ultimate charmer, the Grieg Concerto in A Minor. Janis plays the last movement of the Rachmaninov Third Concerto, and the most "risky" piece in this conservative environment, the finale from the Prokofiev Third Concerto, Op. 26.
