Extractions: By AMY MCCLUSKEY The Virginia Wesleyan College theater held auditions for Moll Flanders, the first musical the college has had in six years, on Nov. 5. Professor of Theater and Communications Bentley Anderson invited Richard Cheshire, a lecturer of drama and theater director, and Peter Golden, musical director, both from the University of Wales, to guest direct the musical. Anderson met Cheshire while on a Spring 1998 sabbatical to the University of Wales in the UK. Anderson and his wife traveled there to contribute to the Universitys theater program. "I know what it is to be a guest director," said Anderson. While at the University of Wales, Anderson helped to judge over 65 senior directing projects. The University has one of the largest theater programs world-wide. Cheshire has directed many plays, and his arrival on Nov. 4, marked the first time the director has been to the United States. "Hes never even seen a Broadway play," said Anderson. "That is one of the reasons he is coming, so he can see how theater is done here." Moll Flanders is based on a novel written in 1722 by Daniel Defoe. The musical is about a woman, Moll Flanders, who desperately wants to be a good person but is inevitably forced into a life of crime. The musical is about womens issues and poverty, and it takes stabs at the British merchant class.

Extractions: Eilis Cranitch violin Christine Anderson violin Michèle Minne viola Elizabeth Wilson cello Featuring a number of composers all from the ex-Soviet republics, Eastern Approaches is a showcase for the XENIA ENSEMBLE bringing together three contemporary works of great spiritual and artistic value to propose to a wider audience. The CD includes Night Prayers (1991) by the Georgian composer Kancheli, a long movement that forms part of the Life without Christmas cycle, composed in response to the civil war that had recently broken out in the republic. The music is permeated with great sadness and compassion for all those involved in the violence. From the opening bars, the piece embodies the tension between the difficulty of pursuing a spiritual life and the eternal hope that some good will eventually come of the tragedy.

Creative improvised music in the United States has long held a tenuous position when it comes to funding and financial support. The situation is even more uncertain amidst the current conservative political climate that plagues our government. When it comes to cutting costs and confronting the daunting task of deficit reduction, arts and educational programs always seem first on the chopping block. The fact that the Vision Festival has managed to survive through eight incarnations in the face of such realities is a feat to both celebrate and take stock in. That a community-based collective of musicians, artists and performers can find the resources and backing to share what they do with the public at large, and still retain autonomy in the bargain sets an inspiring precedence for the viability of the creative endeavors in this country. Extractions: Great news! Charlie Haden is back in the catalogue with an UNLIMITED edition disc! Recorded in the superb acoustic of New York's Cami Hall, this disc sees one of the world's finest acoustic bass players collaborating with an internationally renowned pianist he has long admired, Chris Anderson (the man who taught Herbie Hancock to play piano). As Charlie says in the liner notes: "Chris is risking his life with every chord, that's how much it means to him. He has such a reverence for beauty, he plays like an angel." This wonderful and unique album combines the beautiful vocals of Sabina Sciubba and the supremely talented piano playing of Chris Anderson augmented by the incredible percussion and bass of Billy Higgins and David Williams. This collection of timeless jazz standards is touched by the remarkable styles of all the players: Sabina's dynamic vocal structures, Chris Anderson's lithe fingerwork, and the intuitively seamless accompaniment of the rhythm section. From The Heart is aptly titled. Chris plays the piano as though his life depends on it; every note is laced with vulnerability. His improvisation with chords is a startlingly beautiful combination of delicacy and deliberation and his selections, though standards, become mysteriously eclectic and varied. Chris sings on In Love In Vain; it is a touching and heartfelt rendition.
Extractions: by Michelle Nikolai Hard bop composer and performer Orrin Evans , 28, is not a household name - yet. The New York Times has called Evans "a singular young pianist" in whose sound "you hear an adventurous mind with a refreshing aversion to cliché." He placed second in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in 1999 and the Philadelphia native has performed with Donald Byrd Robin Eubanks Charles Fambrough Roy Hargrove ... Buster Williams and the Mingus Big Band , among others. In 1994 Evans recorded The Orrin Evans Trio on his own Black Entertainment label. He's cut five albums with the Dutch jazz label Criss Cross , and debuted last year on U.S. based Palmetto Records with Meant to Shine . Evans will release a new live album this month, The Band - Live at the Widener on his new label, Imani Records , with J.D. Allen on tenor sax, Sam Newsome on soprano sax, Reid Anderson on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums. Evans has some strong opinions about the music he loves and the state of the music industry.

The Best Films Of 2001 Y Tu Mamá También. BEST DIRECTOR Roman Polanski, The pianist;Paul Thomas anderson, PunchDrunk Love; Pedro Almodóvar http://www.geocities.com/mrbanana83/bestof2002.html
Extractions: The Best Films of 2002 April is a strange time to be compiling a year-end report, and yet I must admit, with the naïve flush of pride that attends a babys first steps, that I am less displeased with my tardiness here and now than I am delighted by my progress overall. Last years list, a piddling five films long, didnt become a cyber-reality until June 2002; this years list a true top-10 marks an improvement not only by five films but by five months. At this rate, my 2003 top-15 list should be available by mid-December. There is something extraordinarily freeing, and more than a little depressing, about being able to write without deadlines. On one hand, the strictures that a publication schedule imposes on ones time, creativity and nerves are no different from the limitations that, as Orson Welles famously insisted, are necessary to create art and if you dont believe that criticism can be art, you have no business being on this site. (Whether its good art or bad art is another question altogether.) But speaking of good art, heres the list. No commentary this year (perhaps Im not making progress after all), but its a full 10, and the Oscars wish-fulfillment section seems, to my mind, fairer than ever.
Jazz Scene 042804 Friday night the great alto saxophonist Gary Bartz and the equally great drummerLewis Nash shared the stage with pianist Khalid Moss and bassist Jim anderson. http://www.jazzadvocate.com/Henkes Column/Jazz Scene 042804.htm
Extractions: Jazz Scene 042804 By Don Henke There seems to be an unending amount of good jazz in the Dayton area. There is a wealth of special events along with the regular weekly gigs, more even than in the larger cities to the north and south. The last two weeks in particular have contained a plethora of events, including both national and regional musicians. Last week's column outlined many of the previous weekend's events and the past weekend was even better. Friday night the great alto saxophonist Gary Bartz and the equally great drummer Lewis Nash shared the stage with pianist Khalid Moss and bassist Jim Anderson. The result was an evening of magic. The concert opened with just the rhythm section playing Moss' composition "Desperate Measures". Neither Anderson nor Nash had ever played the song and there was just a quick run-through beforehand. It turned out beautifully. Bartz then came on stage and led them through a fast-paced version of Kurt Weill's "Speak Low". This was followed by a beautiful reading of Billy Strayhorn's "Isfahan". The measure of a musician is not necessarily how fast he can play, but how he handles a ballad. Young musicians, take note. Cedar Walton's "Bolivia" was next and then, in a textbook lesson on pacing, another ballad, "My One and Only Love". The first set ended with Bartz's "Uncle Bubba", written for the CD on which he played with Sphere. Bartz obviously loves to play ballads as much as the late Dexter Gordon did, as the second set opened with "You Don't Know What Love Is". The quartet then pulled out all the stops on John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" with Bartz and Moss freewheeling through the changes and Nash delivering a show-stopping solo. The concert concluded with the second tune made famous by the great Johnny Hodges ("Isfahan" was the first), "On the Sunny Side of the Street".
