Extractions: 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH They've Got the Brains, Talent, and Drive to Make a Difference Edited by Howard Means, with the staff of The Washingtonian Almost all of The Washingtonian's editors and writers helped with this article. Special contributions were made by assistant editor Brooke Lea Foster; by Susan Davidson, Ken DeCell, Diane Granat, Cynthia Hacinli, Thomas Head, Harry Jaffe, Barbara Matusow, William O'Sullivan, Courtney Rubin, and Ellen Ryan; and by editorial assistants Denise Kersten, Courtney Porter Martin, and James Savage. Note that the words at the top of this page read 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH, not THE 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH. That has been the first lesson for all of us who helped prepare this end-of-the-century article: The Washington area has so much talent that any attempt to be as definitive as "the 100" is folly. As we were doing the reporting, we would set ourselves a rough quota of, say, a dozen social entrepreneurs, and suddenly we'd be facing a list of 50 people who were making extraordinary sacrifices and progress against all sorts of woes. And so it went, through virtually every calling. The youth movement meant that some professions fell by the wayside. Architects, to cite one example, rarely break free of the cloud cover until they are in their forties, as two prominent local architects explained to us. So be it, but we're sorry to be without a representative from their ranks.

For me, this was the year that her voice and her artistry were in the most perfect balance, and fortunately her work during this year was well documented. Her five commercial recordings from that year, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La sonnambula, Turandot, Manon Lescaut and this Medea indicate the breadth and range of her art. On top of these were the legendary live performances of Anna Bolena and Un ballo in maschera, and of course the famous Dallas rehearsal, the most substantial document we have showing Callas at work.

Extractions: CLASSICALabels, Contact us SONY Classics Cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins Ton Koopman conducting the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra for his first recording of concertos and new transcriptions of music by Antonio Vivaldi, created especially for Ma and the period-instrument orchestra by Koopman. Vivaldi¹s Cello was released on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. As on the two acclaimed Simply Baroque recordings he made with Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, released in 1999 and 2000, Ma had his cello a 1712 Stradivarius reconfigured as a Baroque instrument. "Baroque music was greatly influenced by the character of the Baroque instrument the gut strings, the lack of an endpin and the less-arched bridge all contribute to its more muted and intimate nature," Ma said after recording the Simply Baroque albums. "For this music to speak with its own voice, even in transcription, it was necessary to recover the nature of the instrument." The cellist also uses a Baroque bow and the relative tuning (in which instruments are tuned only in relation to each other) employed by the orchestra. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra performs on period instruments, utilizing performance practices of the Baroque era. The recording was made in De Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden, The Netherlands. On the new disc, Ma is soloist in three cello concertos by Vivaldi the Concerto for two Celli, Strings and Basso Continuo in G Minor, RV 531; the Concerto for Cello Strings and Basso Continuo in B-Flat Major, RV 423; and Concerto for Cello, Strings and Basso Continuo in C Minor, RV 401. Koopman has also devised for Ma a new arrangement of Vivaldi¹s Concerto for Viola d¹Amore, Lute and Orchestra, RV 540 heard here as a Concerto for Cello, Organ, Strings and Basso Continuo. Koopman conducts from the organ in this concerto and from the harpsichord in the other selections.
