Extractions: Real Audio Eugene Albulescu , is a pianist who combines a blazing technique with the artistic integrity and originality to express musical emotions at their profoundest level. His wide-ranging career has taken him to new avenues, such as his recent BargeMusic concert in New York City, which included his own compositions written in response to works of visual art, copies of which were displayed in the hall. In a more mainstream vein, Albulescu gave his Carnegie Hall debut playing Liszt's E flat Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Peters in November 2001. A month later he traveled to Romania to perform Tchaikovsky's 1st Concerto with the Georges Enescu National Philharmonic . In February 2002 he gave a solo recital at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The 2002-3 season included performances in Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and in Tennessee interpreting Beethovens Emperor Concerto with the Johnson City Symphony. In November 2004, Albulescu will collaborate with the Fry Street Quartet for the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City in a concert including the Brahms f minor Quartet. Albulescu will tour with the Fry Street Quartet throughout the 2004-5 season. Albulescu will also tour California in mid-January 2005, beginning with a solo recital in San Diego.

Extractions: Fry Street is a little street in Chicago where our quartet was born in 1997. The street was about 20 yards long and it was not on our street map, so we claimed it for our own, laying our artistic stake in the very neighborhood that gangsters claimed years ago. We dreamed then of lives in music and world tours, but rehearsed on Fry Street simply for the love of music, in a tiny apartment into which a string quartet could barely squeeze. Now, as our dreams and aspirations come truer every day, we keep the name Fry Street to remind us of the love that began our journey, and of our vision for the future- that every little street may have on it a young string quartet that dreams of music and plays for the sheer love of it.
Extractions: WHEN pianist Eugene Albulescu retaliated from the stage against critic Tim Bridgewater at a Wellington concert last month, he may have slammed the door shut on his New Zealand career. Within 24 hours, Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ) - parent body of the Wellington Chamber Music Society, which organised the concert - had called off Albulescu's planned tour of New Zealand next year. It told his US agent that he had "spent four or five minutes from the stage, berating" Bridgewater. It was during Sibelius' Piano Sonata, the last item on the programme of the afternoon concert, that 26-year-old Albulescu resolved to speak out - not expecting, he says, to "cause a nuclear reaction." He told the audience of his disquiet at 10 years of "personal" and adverse reviews by Bridgewater, who reviews for the Dominion. His letters of complaint to the Dominion had gone unanswered, and - he said later - "I'd found it increasingly difficult to play at my best in Wellington." An encore followed, but there will be no more encores for the Rumanian-born, Wellington-based pianist as far as CMNZ is concerned. "This was extremely embarrassing for both the audience and the organisers of the concert," a spokesperson declared. "CMNZ is not prepared to take that sort of risk for concerts under its auspicies."

Albulescu has received superlative accolades from critics wherever he has played. He has already performed and recorded on four continents, as well as being a founding member of the highly acclaimed New Zealand chamber group, the Turnovsky Trio. Eugene Albulescu gave his New York debut in 1996 with a unique solo recital at Bargemusic, when his landmark interpretation of Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata was honored by National Public Radio station WNYC with a live broadcast. A native of Romania, Albulescu attended the George Enescu Music School in Bucharest, and emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1984 to escape Romania's Communist regime. Classical Net Review - Liszt - Piano Music Transcription of Waltz from Gounod's "Faust" S. 407. eugene albulescu, piano. Manu 1446 DDD 1993 6637 solo piano music of Liszt, and to Romanianborn pianist eugene albulescu. http://www.classical.net/~music/recs/reviews/m/man01446a.html
Extractions: Manu 1446 DDD 1993 66:37 The young virtuoso Albulescu (b. 1970), who has lived in New Zealand for over a decade, appeals to a new breed of listener for this composer. Albulescu's stated aim in making this recording is to add his "small voice" to that of the great Liszt interpreters of the past (Arrau, Richter, and Bolet come to mind), and to present a recital which recognizes the multi-stylistic nature of the composer's music. Albulescu has apparently undergone a new awakening with respect to Liszt's music, his B Minor Sonata in particular. In this piece, Albulescu is convinced that the composer was depicting nothing short of the Fall of Man in the eyes of God (Satan successfully tempting Adam), and the subsequent redemption of humanity through Jesus the Messiah. Now, I'm sure many of us had detected wisps of infernal meddling in the opening and in other parts of this epic work, not to mention muted spirituality, while understanding less the why's, what's and how's. It is quite a treat, then, to rehear this imposing sonata when molded by a performer who not only wields an artistic but deeply conceived programmatic agenda as well. There is perhaps some truth to the notion that Liszt is a composer that can survive a bit of understatement with respect to interpretation, and perhaps that is what my ears tell me most is happening with Albulescu's piano. Not that his Liszt Sonata is dull, or common. In fact, Albulescu's reading is affectionate and caring, as well as dramatic and brilliant. As based upon the Biblical references, it was fun to try to see this interpretation through to its logical conclusion, and it certainly is a valid one, since for me it "works".
EUGENE ALBULESCU, PIANO born eugene albulescu is an educator with strong ideas about how to reach younglisteners; as is evident from these CD s, he is a first rate pianist with http://www.lehigh.edu/eua2/public/www-data/reviews.html
Extractions: REVIEW EXCERPTS "Eugene Albulescu plays the piano with a panache all too rare in the modern classical music scene. Specializing in difficult pieces and mastering them with acrobatic ease, Albulescu makes music that reaches all of us and connects in a profound manner with all of us young and old." BORDERS BOOKS AND MUSIC REVIEW "As is evident from his interview elsewhere in this issue, Romania-born Eugene Albulescu is an educator with strong ideas about how to reach young listeners; as is evident from these CD's, he is a first rate pianist with strong fingers and a strong interpretative perspective as well. The Liszt recital won a Grand Prix du Disque Liszt in 1995 and one can easily see why. From the torrential account of the Second Legend that opens the disc to the bear hug of the Faust Waltz that closes it, these are majestic performances, with rich colors and (partly because of Albulescu's powerful left hand) plenty of weight. Yet unlike say, Bolet in his later years, Albulescu never seems to be milking the music for its color. All in all, a pianist to watch." FANFARE MAGAZINE "His playing showed him to be a master of control and precision. It also showed that he has both a powerful technique and a powerful musical intellect... The music clearly meant something to the performer, and that sense was transmitted to the audience. Although Albulescu's speciality seems to be the Romantic period, he really is a classicist at heart. Albulescu is clearly a performer with a large future. "
