During the next 75 years, applications were developed, such as powerful magnets built of superconducting materials for medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high energy accelators like the proposed Superconducting Supercollider (SSC), and very senstive magnetic field detectors called Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). Because of the expense and inconvenience of liquid helium refrigeration, however, other applications of the phenomenon were not considered economically feasible. In April 1986, two researchers at IBM in Switzerland, K. Alex Muller and George Bednorz, detected superconductivity in (La-Ba) CuO with a T c up to 35 K, in contrast to the previous record of 23 K for which they were subsequently awwarded the Nobel Prize. By the end of 1986, superconductivity research achieved revolutionary advances with the effort of Paul C. W. Chu and colleagues at the University of Houston. Signs of superconductivity above 77 K were repeatedly observed in poorly-characterized samples during the period, strongly affirming the belief in the existence of superconductivity in the liquid-nitrogen temperature range. The scientific world knew that the textbooks had to be rewritten after January 1987, when the Houston group in collaboration with M. K. Wu, Chu's former student, achieved stable and reproducible superconductivity above 90 K in Y

    Extractions: 6 August 2003 Researchers from Israel have developed a new way to date archaeological objects that is based on superconductivity. The new technique relies on measuring the magnetic signal from lead - which was widely used in antiquity - in samples that have been cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The method could be used to date pipes, coins, bottles and other objects (S Reich et al. New J. Phys Figure 1 Lead is stable in many environments and corrodes only very slowly into lead oxide and lead carbonate. It becomes a superconductor when cooled below 7.2 Kelvin, whereas the corrosion products do not. This means that the magnetization of the lead will be several orders of magnitude higher than that of the corrosion products when the sample is placed in an applied magnetic field at temperatures below 7.2 Kelvin. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the magnetic signal from the sample is coming from the lead only. Shimon Reich from the Weizmann Institute of Science and two colleagues - Grigori Leitus, a metallurgist, and Sariel Shalev, an archaeologist at the Weizmann Institute and also the University of Haifa - started by measuring the magnetization of small discs of material from different samples. This allowed them to calculate the amount of metallic lead that was present by mass. Next they weighed the samples, which gave them the total mass - the lead plus corrosion products. The difference between these two masses is therefore the mass of the corrosion products alone.
