Hawking was referring to was the advent of a Grand Unified Theory, which would finally enable physicists to treat the four seemingly intrinsic forces of nature - weak, strong, gravitational and electromagnetic forces - as manifestations of a single deeper, fundamental interaction. Today, despite the plethora of candidates, none of the vaunted theories has lived up to its billing. Theoretical physicists nevertheless jealously guard their belief in the eventual reconciliation of physics without questioning whether such an outcome is actually tenable. The real fallacy lies not in the quest for a possibly unattainable goal, but in the lack of familiarity with the philosophical issues underpinning that search. Physicists seem to have forgotten that the scientific method is the culmination of heated metaphysical argument stemming largely from the time of the Renaissance and Reformation. To understand this "crisis of perception" it is imperative to re-evaluate the historical context and origin of analytical thinking, with which Descartes is largely credited. To comprehend the behaviour of a system, he asserted that it was necessary to break up complex phenomena into their constituent parts, understanding the whole from their properties. He separated the world into the "res cogitans" (the internal/mental world), and the "res extensa" (the external world). This is known as mind-matter dualism and it allows one to speak in terms of a subject-object - objective reality independent of a subjective observer.

Extractions: KTF History of Physics in Prague The beginning of science in the Czech territory is related to the founding of the Charles University in Prague by Emperor Charles IV in 1348. During the first centuries of its existence the lectures on physics and astronomy were held in the arts (now philosophy) faculty. The outstanding personalities were Christian of Prachatice (1366-1439), a close friend of Master Jan Hus, and Jan Ondrejuv called Sindel (1375-1454). They were concerned with astronomical observations. Sindel's measurements of the planets and the Sun were so accurate that they were still praised by Tycho Brahe two centuries later. The high level of science in Prague at that time is confirmed by sophisticated Prague Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall - the medieval planetarium. It was made according to Sindel's plans by the clockmaster Mikulas of Kadan in 1410. During the religiously tolerant reign of Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1612) who was interested in science and arts, favourable conditions for the development of natural sciences were established. The personal physician of Rudolph II and astronomer Tadeas Hajek of Hajek (1525-1600) published his studies of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopea in 1572. Hajek was in frequent scientific correspondence with the recognized astronomer

Actually, the spear (called a dart or yaomitl ) is much more like an arrow. It has fletching added to stabilize flight and is quite flexible. The dart can come in many different lengths.
