Extractions: This Center was formed in 1989 with funding from the National Science Foundation , until funding expired in 1999. While in existence, it provided a national resource for the Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics Community, through the mechanisms listed below. This page is being maintained at a minimal level, nevertheless, because of possible continuing interest in some of the online talks that can be accessed below. Nevertheless, it should be noted that we are no longer sponsoring workshops, and the Condon Postdoctoral Fellowship is no longer being awarded. CTAMOP sponsored workshops in critical areas of Theoretical AMO Physics. These workshops were intended to focus on current problem areas in the field and to enhance the theoretical study of Experimental AMO Physics problems of current interest. CTAMOP funds the research of a faculty member in the Physics Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder , in the general area of Theoretical AMO Physics.

ATOMIC, MOLECULAR AND OPTICAL PHYSICS Experimental and theoretical investigations pertaining to ionatom and ion-molecule collisions are being carried out by the atomic and molecular physics group. http://physics.wm.edu/Grad_Brochure/AMOPhysics.html
Extractions: Experiment Champion , Cooke Theory Delos and the Theory Group Experimental and theoretical investigations pertaining to ion-atom and ion-molecule collisions are being carried out by the atomic and molecular physics group. Experimental work in the field of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics is currently concentrated in the areas of ion-atom (molecule) collision physics and ion-surface collisions. In both of these fields, the underlying purpose is to develop a detailed understanding of the various dynamic mechanisms which are important in low-energy atomic collisions. Examples of specific processes include charge transfer and electron detachment in ion-atom collisions, and secondary electron emission in ion-surface collisions. The results of the studies are related to a variety of applied areas, ranging from understanding the molecular balance of the atmosphere, to chemical lasers, to increasing the luminosity of flat-panel displays. Most recently, in the area of ion-atom collisions, we have measured total cross sections for processes known as electron detachment and charge transfer in collisions of negative ions in the atmospherically important molecule ozone, e.g. O- + O3 -> O + O3 + e, O + O3-, along with more fundamental studies in which similar mechanisms are investigated for a target of atomic hydrogen. Neither of these targets (O3 or H) ``comes in a bottle'' and the production and characterization of a beam of H or O3 represents a substantial portion of the experimental effort associated with such experiments.
