It] seems to me that in spite of the large number of monographs—and among them many brilliant works—about [Johann Gottfried von] Herder and his ideas on the philosophy of the history of man, his incredibly thorough and rich speculative system has not been fully appreciated for its greatness and, above all, its superiority to Kant's rather paltry image of man. Perhaps this is because Herder's intuitive-historical way of thinking and his writing style, in which fantastic analogies sometimes run riot, lack the pathos of the strict abstractness that deals with the issues as harshly as Kant—under whose harsh treatment they sometimes lose their form. Neither the Cartesian dichotomy of body and anima or ratio nor the Kantian division into sensory nature and reason is satisfactory for Herder—he sees more. As a philosopher of the Enlightenment, Herder, like Linnaeus and Buffon, also sees man as a rational person, raised above the animal kingdom because of his reason. But for Herder reason is not a substance that can be isolated and, freed of all connections to the senses, added on to the body or soma as a differential element. Instead, he sees reason as an autonomous, psychic-lawful essence, as the spiritual unity of man in the same sense J. H. Fichte later expressed in more clearly defined concepts. Herder's understanding of man as a unified spiritual entity is the starting point for the drastic, polemic difference between him and Kant. In Kant's theory of reason, reason is the differential element, a substance in itself foreign to the body and the senses, that develops toward ever greater perfection and that continues this development when it has cast off the earthly shackles. Thus, a straight line runs through the development of reason in this world and the next, and death is merely a relatively irrelevant event. In Kant's view, the rational person must continue with this unending development when freed from the body just as much as in earthly life. And life on earth does not seem to obstruct this development any more than the life hereafter.

    Extractions: Video: Finding Nemo - I should be tired of this movie since every day my 2 year old granddaughter comes over -every other day - the first thing sge does is get the Nemo box from my cabinet and bring it to me saying "Mamu Mamu Mamu" ( Nemo, Nemo, Nemo) I can probably recite most of the dialog. However I never cease to enjoy the movie. It is a masterwork and improves with subsequent viewing - and I ought to know! The graphics are astounding. The rich detail, the funny dialog and the life that Albert Brooks, Ellen Degeneris, and the rest including Willem Dafoe are the life of this movie. The bonus material is fantastic and included on a second disk which also contains the halfscreen ( so called "full" screen) version with the ends chopped off. I have this little rubber shark-topped floating thermometer in my pool. Caitlin calls him Bruce. Oh yeah, the soundtrack in THX is awesome. This is a magnificent acheivement. Bravo. It may be supposed a kids movie but I love it.

    Extractions: Plato and Aristotle This third volume of Order and History completes Voegelin's study of Greek culture from its earliest pre- Hellenic origins to its full maturity with the dominance of Athens. As the title suggests, Plato and Aristotle is principally devoted to the work of the two great thinkers who represent the high point of philosophic inquiry among the Greeks. Through an absorbing analysis of the Platonic and Aristotelian vision of soul, polis, and cosmos, Voegelin demonstrates how the symbolic framework of the older myth was superseded by the more precisely differentiated symbols of philosophy. Although this outmoding and rejection of past symbols of truth might seem to lead to a chaotic and despairing relativism, Voegelin makes it the basis of a profound conception of the historical process: "the attempts to find the symbolic forms that will adequately express the meaning [of a society], while imperfect, do not form a senseless series of failures. For the great societies have created a sequence of orders, intelligibly connected with one another as advances toward, or recessions from, an adequate symbolization of the truth concerning the order of being of which the order of society is a part." In this view, history has no obvious "meaning," yet each society makes a similar venture after truth. Although every society works out its destiny under different conditions, each nonetheless creates symbols"in its deeds and institutions"which bear the meaning of its own existence. History, then, acquires a unity in the common endeavor toward meaning and order. The rationality and nobility of this view of history has much to say to the present age.
