Title "On the Generation of Hyper-powersets for the DSmT" Abstract The recent theory of plausible and paradoxical reasoning (DSmT) developped by the authors appears to be a nice promising theoretical tools to solve many information fusion problems where a strong internal conflict between sources arise. The main idea of DSmT is to work on the hyper-powerset of the frame of discernment of the problem under consideration. Although the definition of hyper-powerset is well established, the major difficulty in practice is to generate such hyper-powerset in order to implement DSMT Fusion rule on computers. We propose in this paper an efficient algorithm for generating hyper-powersets and discuss the limitations of our computers to generate such sets when the dimension of the problem increases. 2 - Jean Dezert, Onera, France ;

Extractions: Studies in Soviet Thought vol 37 (Dordrecht: Kluwer, 1990), pp. 83-122. ISSN 0039-3797 Dialectics and the existence of contradictory truths As conceived of by Hegel, dialectics belongs to negative reason which, as against the dogmatic onesidedness characterizing reflection or understanding , puts forward the emergence of contradictions, thus dissolving the apparently hard and solid constructions of understanding. Positive reason instead claims as its own task that of sublating both understanding and the dialectical criticism thereof by positing the contradictions as both true and not true, on a higher level wherein both moments are at the same time kept and yet overcome or cancelled. The foregoing is of course the traditional mainstream construal of Hegel's views on contradiction. A number of authors have challenged such an interpretation, trying to show that Hegel did not in fact assert the existence of contradictory truths in any straightforward sense of the word. Foot note 1_1 I refrain from going into those exegetical issues in this paper. Frankly, my belief is that, as in most if not all cases, the traditional construal is the best one. Charity is more often than not misapplied or overstretched in philosophical interpretations. This is likely to be a matter of opinion, but I think it better to construe any philosophical corpus as literally as possible, if only because by so doing we grant it a greater interest. Charitable interpretations succeed in rendering history of philosophy dull, with a Parmenides who would not have denied the existence of plurality, a Berkeley who would not have denied that of bodies and a Hegel who would have said nothing falling afoul of Aristotelian logic.

Extractions: David A. White, Logic and Ontology in Heidegger . Columbus (Ohio): Ohio State U.P., 1985. Pp. 245. Hardbound. That logic and ontology have something or other in common is widely, if not unanimously, admitted. But what? Many people have maintained that logic is formal and does not concern itself with content, so a logical theory can entail no ontological commitment then no subject matter would be common to both logic and ontology, but logic would be the unavoidable framework outside or without which no ontology could be set up, articulated or put forward. Such is the formalistic view of logic . Other conflicting views have also been held, of course. Frege, Russell, Ferdinand Gonseth came close to identifying logic with ontology. (Husserl's conception of logic as both formal ontology and formal apophantics lies somewhere in between.) The author of the book under review, D.A. White, seems to take the formalistic view for granted. That is going to constitute one of his major grounds for challenging Heidegger's attempts to base logic upon an elucidation of Being. Another, still firmer assumption of D. A. White's approach is that there is only one logic, which is logic. Thus no forays are made by the author into an assessment of Heidegger's explorations from the standpoint of the existence of several, mutually discrepant, systems of logic. And yet that approach might well turn out to be most fruitful. Denken consistently coherent , i.e. negationally consistent account. That may sound reasonable, but within the present context it is question-begging.
