Reprinted in the Supplement to Meaning and Necessity: A Study in Semantics and Modal Logic, enlarged edition (University of Chicago Press, 1956). Others object strongly to this procedure as violating the basic principles of empiricism and leading back to a metaphysical ontology of the Platonic kind. It is the purpose of this article to clarify this controversial issue. The nature and implications of the acceptance of a language referring to abstract entities will first be discussed in general; it will be shown that using such a language does not imply embracing a Platonic ontology but is perfectly compatible with empiricism and strictly scientific thinking. Then the special question of the role of abstract entities in semantics will be discussed. It is hoped that the clarification of the issue will be useful to those who would like to accept abstract entities in their work in mathematics, physics, semantics, or any other field; it may help them to overcome nominalistic scruples. 2. Rudolf Carnap May 18 September 14 ) was a German philosopher He was born in Ronsdorf and educated at the Gymnasium of Barmen and the University of Freiburg. At university he studied physics, mathematics and, under Bruno Bauch, philosophy. Initially Carnap's main interest was physics but his intended studies were halted by WW I , during which Carnap served. Post-war Carnap returned to his studies, writing his dissertation, Der Raum , on the theory of space and time under Bauch. Following the acceptance of his thesis in 1922 Carnap continued to work on issues in physics from a philosophical perspective as a logical positivist He moved to Vienna in 1926 to take up an academic post at the University of Vienna and became involved in the Vienna Circle , a group of intellectuals led by Moritz Schlick and including Hans Hahn Friedrich Waissman Otto Neurath , and attended on occasion by Kurt Gödel and Carl Hempel , among others. He studied mathematics, physics and philosophy in Jena; he was one of the very few students of Frege. After obtaining his doctorate in philosophy with the thesis Der Raum , he joined the Vienna Circle in 1926; his first major work Der logische Aufbau der Welt (1928) established his reputation as a logical empiricist. In 1936 he moved into the United States, and taught at Chicago, and after Reichenbach's death, at Los Angeles. His contributions to logical semantics, philosophy of science in general, philosophy of space, philosophy of probability and induction are very important. Quine, for instance, formed his own philosophical thoughts in opposition to Carnap's.
