Extractions: German chemist whose method of synthesizing olefins (alkenes) from carbonyl compounds is a reaction often termed the Wittig synthesis. For this achievement he shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Wittig was born in Berlin and studied at Kassel and Marburg. He was professor at Freiburg 1937-44, Tubingen 1944-56, and Heidelberg 1956-67. In the Wittig reaction, which he first demonstrated 1954, a carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone) reacts with an organic phosphorus compound, an alkylidenetriphenylphosphorane, (C6H5)3P=CR2, where R is a hydrogen atom or an organic radical. The alkylidene group (=CR2) of the reagent reacts with the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group to form a hydrocarbon with a double bond, an olefin (alkene). In general:

Alkenes are unsaturated substances. The generic formula is C n H . The simplest alkene is ethene (also known as ethylene Alkenes are relatively stable compounds, but are more reactive than alkanes. (Where -R represents the carbon chain.) The aldehyde functional group is a carbonyl group bonded to a hydrogen atom and a carbon atom. A ketone can be generally represented by the formula: R (CO)R Among the other oxygen-containing compounds, the fact that ketones feature a carbonyl carbon bonded to two carbon atoms distinguishes them from carboxylic acids, aldehydes, esters, and amides. The double-bonded nature of the carbonyl group distinguishes ketones from alcohols and ethers. The smallest ketone is acetone:

Development of ylide chemistry and, together with that, study of the Stevens and Sommelet rearrangements as well as intra-anionic ether isomerisation. Through the synthesis of the pentaaryl derivatives of the elements of group 5, the phosphorous ylides were discovered and also, in 1953, the carbonylolefins which have since proven to be crucial for the manufacture of synthetic fabrics and also important in other industrial processes. In 1942 dehydrobenzol was proven to be a shortlived by-product, a fact demonstrated bye. D. Roberts in 1953 and by me, only this time using different means, viz. control experiments on Diels - Alder adducts. More recently the concept of the "at"-complexes as a counterpart to the "onium" complexes has led to the development of a new chemistry from which have come the sodium tetra phenylborates.

In investigating reactions involving carbanions, negatively charged organic species, Wittig discovered a class of organic phosphorus compounds called ylides that mediate a particular type of reaction that became known as the Wittig reaction. This reaction proved of great value in the synthesis of complex organic compounds such as vitamins A and D , prostaglandins, and steroids.
