Otto studied Chemistry at Goettingen University and got his doctors degree in 1869 after five semesters only. In 1879 the Chair of Pharmacology became unoccupied and gave him the opportunity to vacate in, which gave him the strength to focus on his work. During this time he discovered the iminochlorides by the action of phosphorus pentachloride on the acid amides. In 1910 he won the Nobel Prize for "recognition of his services to organic chemistry and the chemical industry by his pioneer work in the field of alicyclic compounds." Reference Wilson, H.W. Nobel Prize Winners ; Wasson Tyler, H.W. Wilson Company: New York City, NY, 1987; 141-142. Otto Wallach He worked on the nitration of b-napthol. He did nothing of significance until he moved from Bonn to Berlin, then back to Bonn in 1872. He was obliged to fill in the Chair of Pharmacology and was forced to concentrate his interests in that direction. He discovered iminochlorides. Kekule then invited Wallach to study the contents of bottles in an old forgotten cupboard and he became obsessed. The bottles were filled with C10H16 groups. Using HCl and HBr he succeeded in charatarizing the differences between the structures in that group. He received a Nobel Prize in 1910 for his work on alicyclic compounds.

Extractions: Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Otto Wallach The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1910 Otto Wallach was born on March 27, 1847, in Konigsberg, Germany, the son of Gerhard Wallach and his wife, nee Otillie Thoma. His father was a high-ranking civil servant. In 1867 he went to Gottingen to study chemistry with Wohler, Fitig and Hubner but soon left for Berlin to study for one semester under A. W. Hoffman and G. Magnus. After his return to Gottingen he worked so hard that he managed to obtain his doctor's degree-in 1869 under Hubner- after studying for only five semesters. His thesis dealt with the position isomers in the toluene series. In 182 he returned to Born, where he stayed for 19 years. He first became assistant in the organic laboratory, and later was appointed Privatdozent. In 1876 came his appointment as Professor Extraordinary. When in 1879 the Chair of Pharmacology became vacant he was obliged to occupy it, which forced him to specialize in this direction. It was during this period that he discovered the iminochlorides by the action of phosphorous pentachloride on the acid amides. Wallach received the Davy Medal in Gold and Silver in 1912. He was also recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1910 "in recognition of his services to organic chemistry and the chemical industry by his pioneer work in the field of alicyclic compounds".
