Wagner-Jauregg erkannte bei Patienten mit bis dahin unheilbaren geistigen Erkrankungen eine vorübergehende Besserung des Zustands nach fiebrigen Krankheiten. Die Erforschung dieses Zusammenhangs wurde zu seiner Lebensaufgabe. Schon 1887 publizierte er eine Schrift über die Fiebertherapie. 1927 wurde ihm "für die Entdeckung der therapeutischen Bedeutung der Malariaimpfung bei progressiver Paralyse" der Nobelpreis verliehen. Da sehr bald andere, noch wirksamere Behandlungsformen durch die Anwendung von Antibiotika entdeckt wurden, besaß die Erkenntnis von Wagner-Jauregg ab den 40er Jahren nur noch historischen Wert. sozialmedizinischer Bedeutung war aber die von Wagner-Jauregg menschliche Lebensdauer, 1941; Lebenserinnerungen, herausgegeben und von und M. Jantsch, 1950.

Extractions: A Brief Biography J ulius Wagner von Jauregg was born on March 7, 1857, in Wels, Austria. His father was a knight (Ritter) of the German empire. He studied Medicine at Vienna University from 1874 to 1880, where he also studied with Salomon Stricker in the Institute of General and Experimental Pathology, obtaining his doctor's degree in 1880. From 1883 to 1887 he worked with Leidesdorf in the Psychiatric Clinic, although his original training was not in the pathology of the nervous system. In 1889 he suceeded the famous Richard von Krafft-Ebing at the Neuro-Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Graz, and started his research on goitre, cretinism and iodine. In 1893 he became Extraordinary Professor of Psychiatry and Nervous Diseases, and Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Nervous Diseases in Vienna, as successor to Meynert. Ten years later, in 1902, Wagner-Jauregg moved to the psychiatric clinic at the General Hospital and in 1911 he returned to his former post. The main work pursued by Wagner-Jauregg throughout his life was related to the treatment of mental disease by inducing a fever . Julius Wagner-Jauregg won the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in 1927 "for his discovery of the therapeutic value of malaria inoculation in the treatment of dementia paralytica". He shared the honour with the Danish pathologist Johannes Andreas Grib Fibiger (1867-1928), who was awarded the prize "for his discovery of the Spiroptery carcinoma". Wagner-Jauregg's treatment of syphilitic meningoencephalitis, or general paralysis, by the artificial inoculation of malaria constituted the first example of shock therapy. The method brought a previously incurable fatal disease under medical control. He was the first psychiatrist to win the Nobel Prize.
