The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded today to Horst Stormer, Adjunct Physics Director at Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), and two former Bell Labs scientists Robert C. Laughlin and Daniel C. Tsui for their work in quantum physics. They were cited for their discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect, a new state of matter created when electrons come together to form quasi-particles with exact fractions of electrical charges. The experimental work was done at Bell Labs in the early 1980s; the theory was explained later by Laughlin, after he became a professor at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif.

"In this case," said Störmer, "the amazing thing is that, by electrons cooperating with one another and not disintegrating, you get something smaller than the initial object." The Nobel committee cited the trio's work for leading to "the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics." Störmer, Laughlin and Tsui will share the $978,000 prize. "I'm just numb," said Störmer, speaking of the Royal Swedish Academy's decision to award him the most coveted honor in science. His telephone started ringing at about 6:00 a.m. on the day the physics Nobel was announced, waking him and his wife. "We finally had to take it off the hook," he said. But the years of anxious searching in the dark, with their intense longing, their alterations of confidence and exhaustion and the final emergence into the light only those who have experienced it can understand it." Einstein's theories sprang from a ground of ideas prepared by decades of experiments. One of the most striking, in retrospect, was done in Cleveland, Ohio, by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley in 1887. Their apparatus , shown above, was a massive stone block with mirrors and crisscrossing light beams, giving an accurate measurement of any change in the velocity of light. Michelson and Morley expected to see their light beams shifted by the swift motion of the earth in space. To their surprise, they could not detect any change. It is debatable whether Einstein paid heed to this particular experiment, but his work provided an explanation of the unexpected result through a new analysis of space and time. As noted on the previous page , when Einstein used his equations to study the motion of a body, they pointed him to a startling insight about the body's mass and energy.

Antonio Banderas once again picks up the guitar and the gun to reprise his stoic Mexican hero, and along with him is Rodriguezs usual cast-Selma Hayek, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, some of which are resurrected, literally, from Desperado -and they are joined by an offhand, sardonic Johnny Depp, a sexy Eva Mendes, a Mexican Willem Dafoe, a typically slimy Mickey Rourke, and too-good-to-be-in-this-movie Ruben Blades as a demented ex-FBI agent. Around them all is a thread of coherent plot as thin as a spaghetti strand; but one thing is clear, everyone is out for vengeance. There is about to be a coupe on the Mexican presidency by a rouge general funded by Dafoes drug czar, and everyone wants a piece of the action. Hayek, Banderas girl from
