Extractions: Dr. E. Donnall Thomas Throughout the world, thousands of leukemia patients have a second chance at life because of the 40 years of dedicated bone marrow research by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas (1920-). Born in Texas, Dr. Thomas is a hero in the relentless quest to find a cure for cancer. Leukemia, once almost always fatal, is curable today. Over 50% of all patients survive because of Dr. Thomas' discoveries in bone marrow transplants. With healthy new marrow injected into the bloodstream, patients with marrow destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation can produce new cells. Thomas first pursued research of bone marrow and leukemia while in medical school. In 1956, he successfully transplanted bone marrow between a leukemic patient and his identical twin, then in 1969 between relatives who were not identical twins. Thomas searched for a way to perform unrelated donor matches.

I have used and continue to use this textbook as the core text for a computer/info tech and society course I teach to community college students. The text is up-to-date (revised yearly), informative, well illustrated, and extremely well supported by the publisher through supplementary teaching, learning and testing materials and website support. Edward Donnall Thomas Edward donnall thomas (1920) American physician who in 1990 was corecipient (withJoseph E. Murray) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work http://www.nobel-winners.com/Medicine/edward_donnall_thomas.html
Extractions: Thomas studied at the University of Texas (B.A., 1941; M.A., 1943) and the Harvard Medical School (M.D., 1946). He served at a few hospitals and a research centre before becoming a professor of medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons (1955-63) and the University of Washington School of Medicine (from 1963) in Seattle, where he was also associated with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In 1956 Thomas performed the first successful bone marrow transplant between two humans: a leukemic patient and his identical twin. The recipient's body accepted the donated marrow and used it to make new, healthy blood cells and immune system cells. Thomas adopted methods to match the tissues of donor and recipient closely enough to minimize the latter's rejection of the former's marrow, and he also developed drugs to suppress the immune system. In 1969 these refinements enabled him to perform the first successful bone marrow transplant in a leukemia patient from a relative who was not an identical twin. Before his work, leukemia had invariably been a fatal disease. By 1990, as a result of his research, more than half of all leukemia patients could be expected to survive.

It is worth noting, however, that some subfields within clinical medicine simply tend to attract more citations than others do. The table to the left shows the citations-per-paper (impact) rate for 22 subfields in clinical medicine, based on papers published and cited between 1981 and 1997 (therefore, a blended average). The table demonstrates, for example, that the average oncology paper receives more than five times as many cites as a paper in the subfield of orthopedics, rehabilitation, and sports medicine. Extractions: HOME HELP FEEDBACK In Summon up the Blood Don Metcalf gives a personal account of the long and tedious path leading to our present knowledge of growth factors and cytokines. It began with a visit to his laboratory by Ray Bradley who brought a set of Petri dishes containing semisolid agar cultures of mouse bone marrow with surprising small colonies. The colonies were made up of clusters of hematopoietic cells. This event was another example in science of "a picture is worth a thousand words." As one who took Puck 's course in Colorado and attempted liquid marrow cultures in the 1950s, I can understand why it changed Don's life, and initiated studies that were to bring him fame for the betterment of all of us. Don describes with sadness the friction that arose with the Israeli Group of Sachs et al ., who apparently made simultaneous observations of marrow colonies. Don then describes the observation of colony stimulating factor (CSF) and the confusion about what it was and how it acted. A big step forward came from identification and purification of a CSF from human urine. Further confusion followed with recognition that there were several CSFs. The terminology of the various factors eventually became known as M-CSF, GM-CSF, and G-CSF. The book gives the experience of the Melbourne team as they worked out the confusions and contradictions. A unique aspect of the studies in Melbourne was that Dr. Metcalf
