Home A network of warehouses, which is virtually connected for sharing the stock information, is often perceived as Virtual warehousing. Certainly, virtual warehouses were already in existence. For example some major automobile and hi-tech manufacturers, such as Mercedes Benz, Dell, have their own international warehousing systems. These allow items searches to be carried out across all warehouse resources within the network. Many internet-to-consumers companies do not keep stock physically. Besides brand new books, you can buy also second hand ones on Amazon.com, through the company does not keep these books on stock. It acts as a broker to link you (customers) to the person selling the books (suppliers), and takes care of the physical process. Compared to the traditional system, the virtual warehousing system provides a saving on the handling, transport and, therefore, an increase in the supply chain efficiency. Due to these clear pre-eminences, the virtual warehousing concept is being considered as a new trend in distribution logistics. However, the switch over, from the traditional to the new warehousing system, imposes a great challenge. Regarding to this aspect, there are still many open research questions. Which kinds of companies (size, industry) could benefit from virtual warehousing? Are these benefits sufficiently tangible? What are the obstacles of virtual warehousing? What is the routine for companies to implement the virtual warehousing concept? etc.
