    Extractions: - William Shockley Born in London and raised in Palo Alto, Shockley received his Ph.D. in solid-state physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1932 and joined the staff of Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, in 1936. During World War II, he served as director of research for the Antisubmarine Warfare Operations Research Group of the US Navy. After the war, he returned to Bell Labs as director of transistor physics research. Dr. Shockley left Bell Labs in 1955 to establish Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory (part of Beckman Instruments, Inc.), an effort that was instrumental in the birth of Silicon Valley and the electronics industry. His former employees later invented the integrated circuit and founded Intel, the most successful microprocessor company in the world.     Extractions: Agence France-Presse This 1947 file photo shows Dr. William Shockley conducting research that led to the invention of the transistor at Bell Laboratory in 1947. illiam Bradford Shockley, who shared a Nobel Prize in physics for his role in the creation of the transistor and earned the enmity of many for his views on the genetic differences between the races, died of cancer of the prostate at his home in California on Saturday. He was 79 years old and lived on the campus of Stanford University. He was a professor emeritus of electrical engineering at Stanford. In addition, he lectured and wrote extensively. Many of his early endeavors became clouded by controversy, however, because of his pronouncements on race. He preached a philosophy of ''retrogressive evolution.'' Stipulating that intelligence was genetically transmitted, he deemed blacks genetically inferior to whites and unable to achieve their intellectual level. As a corollary, he suggested that blacks were reproducing faster than whites - hence, the retrogression in human evolution. Start of Electronic Age The invention of the transistor became the basis for the electronic age. From it flowed virtually every one of today's devices installed in airliners and cars, calculators and computers, wristwatches and washing machines.

His parents were both geologists, his father a mining engineer, while his mother was a mineral surveyor. They were both on a business trip to England and the family returned to California when William made his first steps. There was a major advantage in his early youth, his parents being both scientists, and the neighbor being a professor in physics at Stanford. The atmosphere in which he grew up was therefore most encouraging. He got his PhD from MIT in . In that early stage there was no sign of an immanent war threat, so most young engineers went working for private companies, and so did Shockley. He joined Bell Laboratories and worked on developing new technologies for telephone switch applications. His scientific work in the field of solid state physics proved to be an immense asset. When America became involved in WW II , Shockley worked on developing radar technology, but as soon as the war was over, he went back to his original field, doing research on solid state technology. Frustrated by the inability of high-cost social programs to contain violence, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, poverty and other social afflictions, senior public health officials and legislators are adopting the theories of a coterie of scientists who trace anti-social behavior to DNA and recommend that the most efficient way to improve society is by screening out and sterilizing people diagnosed as genetically unfit. Those with desirable genes would be given incentives to be fruitful and multiply. If such a scenario reads like science fiction, consider that in this century thousands of Americans were declared "moral imbeciles" or "feeble-minded and sterilized by the state in eugenics programs designed to genetically cleanse the nation (see sidebar below: Eugenics in America). It was not until the shocking revelations of Nazi racist science after World War II, with its euthanasia programs and fiendish experimentations on twins, that the international eugenics movement receded. In recent years, however, dramatic discoveries in genetic research and the financial backing of a racist foundation have provided the opportunity for scientists to revive the eugenics agenda.
