Präsidenten USA der zwischen 1901 und 1909 im Amt war. Roosevelt hatte sich während seiner Amtszeit stark für den Umweltschutz engagiert und da er, bis 1887, selbst einige Zeit in der Gegend von Medora gelebt hatte, wurde bereits um 1919, kurz nach seinem Ableben, von Seiten einiger Bürgergruppen, der Gedanke aufgebracht, ihn mit der Einrichtung eines Nationalparks in den Badlands zu ehren. Am 25. April 1947 wurde schließlich vom Congress der "Theodore Roosevelt National Park" offiziell eingerichtet. Im September 2002 war ich im "Theodore Roosevelt National Park". Nachdem ich die Badlands in Süd-Dakota bereits im Jahr 2000 besucht hatte, war die Spannung, was mich hier in Nord-Dakota erwarten würde, gross. Then onto a gravel path that leads to a small cemetery. In the fields of central Illinois, this could be the sacred ground of a thousand settlements that took root in the mid-1800's. But there is someone special here, a woman whose likeness is guarded on each side by sturdy coal miners, their sledge hammers at the ready. They are two of the thousands of "her boys." Some are buried here in Mount Olive Union Miners' Cemetery with the one they called their "mother," their protector, Mary Harris Jones. She was known by another name in the U. S. Senate, "the grandmother of all agitators." In her 73rd year, Mary Jones began a march from Philadelphia to New York City. She was at the head of her army, several hundred textile workers, half of whom were under 16 years of age. They were on the march to see President Theodore Roosevelt, to plead for his support in ending the abominable work life of tens of thousands of Philadelphia's children. They marched in their tattered rags, many with fingers missing from a moment's carelessness at the loom. Sixty hours a week, week in and week out with no future. The grandmother of all agitators was on the move to fix that, for them and the almost 2,000,000 other children working in mills, mines and factories throughout the country.

Extractions: Theodore Roosevelt Collection The Theodore Roosevelt Collection, housed in Harvard's Houghton and Widener libraries, is a major resource for study of the life and times of the twenty-sixth president of the United States. The collection originated as a research library opened in New York City by the Roosevelt Memorial Association in 1923. It was presented by that organization (known since 1956 as the Theodore Roosevelt Association ) to Harvard University in 1943. Wallace Finley Dailey Access Books, other publications, and some archival files constitute the Roosevelt class, shelvedexcept for rare, fragile, unbound, scrapbook, and manuscript itemsadjacent to the Theodore Roosevelt Reading Alcove at the 2SW corner of the stacks of Widener Library in Harvard Yard. Stack access is by Harvard ID, or, for visitors, through the collection curator. All other collection materials are kept in the adjoining Houghton Library, for use in its reading room by application there or by arrangement with the curator. In many respects, Morris demonstrates this to be true, as the greatness of Roosevelt appears to suggest that the President did set the foundation for the 20th century. His dynamism and intelligence blended in such a way that it created a certain greatness. To a large degree, Roosevelt appears to have represented the best of the United States, just as the U.S. took his best features and made them into national symbols. Morris shows that Roosevelt was very much in love himself, and he had this disposition not so much for what he was as a person, but because he saw himself as an American. He symbolized what it meant to be an American patriot. In many respects, therefore, just as Lincoln defined what it meant to be an American in the 19th century, Morris believes that Roosevelt defined Americanism for the 20th century. The definition of nationalism, therefore, was very much developed by who Roosevelt was, rather than by what he said. Roosevelt was a man of action and his actions spoke very loudly. The action that Roosevelt engaged in became a symbol of Americanism. Roosevelt, we see, was all about action. In many respects, this seems to explain the greatness of America, and in turn, the greatness of Roosevelt. America was about the idea of unrestrained individualism and freedom. People used their opportunity to build greatness. Roosevelt represented this tendency, and he made America what it was because of his dynamism, energy and call to action. His traits, therefore, symbolized America. At the same time, of course, America mirrored him as well. There appeared to be a cyclical process here. Perhaps the President and America helped to define each other. Morris does an excellent job in revealing this, especially in the way he gives a step by step sequence of the action that Roosevelt engaged in, as well as the philosophy that he articulated.

Extractions: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15, 1875 in Holborn, England (a suburb of London). His father, Daniel Hughes Taylor, was a native of Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Daniel Taylor came to England to study medicine. He was a student at Taunton College, Somerset and later at Kings College in London. His work led him to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and to obtain a license from the Royal College of Physicians. His father was not a part of Coleridge-Taylor's life, returning to Sierra Leone either before Samuel's birth or while he was a very young boy. William Tortolano in his book Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; Anglo-Black Composer, 1875-1912 (Metuchen, NJ, Scarecrow, 1977) states: The young doctor became an assistant... The white patients seemed to like the young assistant... Eventually he sought a practice of his own but this became disastrous because of resentment of his color. As an assistant he was received with little reservation, but as an independent doctor he was mistrusted. Dr. Taylor returned to Africa around 1876. As a child Coleridge-Taylor studied violin and sang in the choir of St. George's Church, Croydon. At the age of fifteen he was admitted by Sir George Grove to the Royal College of Music as a violin student. While at the Royal College his interest in composition grew. With the support of Colonel Herbert Walters, one of his first benefactors, and Grove, arrangements were made that Coleridge-Taylor would study composition with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. While studying with Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor competed for one of the nine open scholarships at the college and was awarded the fellowship in composition (1893). At that time Grove wrote, "Now you are a scholar...you are now before the world..."
