Extractions: Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixth president of the United States and Eleanor Roosevelt's uncle. He was also Franklin Roosevelt's progressive political values. So integral was TR's vision to his younger relatives that at least one historian has dubbed the twentieth century, "the Roosevelt century" in recognition of the trio's wide-ranging influence on American life and thought. As governor, TR supported many of the causes that ER would later champion, among them centralized, interventionist government, regulation of women's and children's labor, and taxes on utility and insurance interests. However, TR's progressive views did not endear him to conservative Republicans, who decided to sideline him by nominating him for vice-president in 1900. Their plan backfired when President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 and TR replaced the fallen leader. Like FDR, TR came to the presidency during a time of economic and political change. America was in the throes of industrialization and corporate monopolies were both powerful and unregulated. Europe was in the midst of an arms race as Germany and England vied with each other to see who could build the most modern fleet. Their rivalry was further exacerbated by the European countries' desire to colonize Africa and Asia. In the Far East, Japan was also flexing its military muscles and looking for territory to conquer.

The most dynamic of American presidents, Roosevelt was at once a realist and a romanticist in foreign affairs and a progressive in domestic policy. He was also a fervent nationalist and a consummate moralist. Born in New York City, Roosevelt graduated from Harvard in 1880. He emerged as the leader of reform Republicans in the New York State Assembly in the early 1880s. Thereafter, he pushed practical reforms as head of the U.S. Civil Service Commission (1889-1895), president of the New York City police commission (1895-1897), assistant secretary of the navy (1897-1898), and governor of New York (1899-1900). He vigorously advocated war against Spain in 1898 and then performed heroically in Cuba as colonel of a volunteer cavalry unit, the "Rough Riders." Elected vice president of the United States in 1900, Roosevelt became president after the assassination of William McKinley in September 1901. For seven and a half years, Roosevelt strove to balance the interests of farmers, workers, and businesspeople. Despite his image as a trustbuster, he preferred continuous regulation of giant corporations to dissolution under the antitrust laws, and to that end he drove through Congress legislation creating the Bureau of Corporations and strengthening the regulation of railroads. He also supported regulation of the food and drug industries. But his most significant accomplishment was probably the transfer of 125 million acres of public land into the forest reserves, the doubling of national parks, the creation of sixteen national monuments such as California's Muir Woods, and the establishment of fifty-one wildlife refuges.

Roosevelt became a national hero when he led his Rough Riders up Kettle Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He then served as Republican governor of New York before being elected vice president in 1900. Roosevelt became president in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He is known for his trust busting, programs for conservation of natural resources, and creation of national parks. His Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine claimed the United States could intervene militarily in the Latin American states. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for helping negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War. He also initiated the building of the Panama Canal Roosevelt supported Republican William Howard Taft for president in 1908 but tried for the Republican nomination in 1912. When he lost it to Taft, he split with the Republicans and started the Progressive , or Bull Moose party, with himself running for president. The split Republicans lost the election to the Democrats and Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt hoped to gain the Republican nomination in 1916, but the delegates chose Charles Evans Hughes as their standard-bearer.
