The writers who have most severely censured Sir Robert Peel as a public man have dwelt on the virtues and happiness of his private and domestic life. He was not only a most loving husband ant father but a true and warm-hearted friend. In Whitehall Gardens or at Drayton Manor he gathered some of the mosi distinguished intellects of the day. He indulged in free anc cheerful talk, and sought the conversation of men of science; h~ took delight in art, and was a great collector of pictures; he wn fond of farming and agricultural improvements; he activel~ promoted useful works and the advancement of knowledge; h~ loved making his friends, dependants, tenants and neighbors happy. And, cold as he was in public, few men could be more bright and genial in private than Sir Robert Peel. While in office, Peel succeeded to the baronetcy, Drayton Manor and a great estate by the death of his father (May 3, 1830). The old man had lived to see his fondest hopes fulfilled in the greatness of his son; but he had also lived to see, that a father must not expect to fix his sons opinionsabove all, the opinions of such a son as Sir Robert Peel, and in such an age as that which followed the French Revolution. Those who wish to know more of him will consult his own posthumous Memoirs (f856), edited by his literary executors Earl Stanhope and Viscount Cardwell; his private correspondence, edited by C. S. He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School, Fulneck School, near Leeds, and at Manchester University where he graduated B. Sc. in 1906 and D. Sc. in 1910. Robinson's extensive researches in organic chemistry have dealt not only with the structure and synthesis of many organic bodies, but also with the electrochemical mechanism of organic reactions. His interest in the chemical constitution of plant dyestuffs soon extended to another group of vegetable bodies, the alkaloids, where the whole series of his researches are remarkable for their brilliant syntheses. He contributed greatly towards the definition of the arrangement of atoms within molecules of morphine, papaverine, narcotine, etc. These discoveries led to the successful production of certain antimalarial drugs scientific papers. In 1912 Sir Robert married Gertrude Maud Walsh, a fellow student at Manchester University. She died in 1954; they had one son and one daughter. In 1957, he married Stearn Sylvia Hillstrom of New York.
