The Book of Acts chronicles the history of the early church from its beginnings on the Day of Pentecost to the Apostle Paul arriving in Rome As a young historian, Ramsay was determined to develop an independent historical/geographical study of first-century Asia Minor . He assumed the Book of Acts was unreliable and ignored its historical allusions in his studies. The amount of usable historical information concerning first-century Asia Minor , however, was too little for him to proceed very far with his work. That led him, almost in desperation, to consult the Book of Acts for any help possible. Ramsay discovered that it was remarkably accurate and true to first-century history and topography. Ramsay testified to what changed his mind: Asia Minor . It was gradually borne upon me that in various details the narrative showed marvelous truth. Travers Named from the Greek, kryptos , "hidden" Points of Interest: Now knowing the existence of argon and helium, and their atomic weights, 40 and 4, respectively, Sir William Ramsay hypothesized that these gases might belong to a new group of the periodic system and that there must be an intermediate member with an atomic weight of approximately 20. Ramsay, now with the aid of Dr. Morris Travers, first tried isolating the gas by heating rare minerals which was used successfully in the past as part of Ramsay's work with nitrogen and the discovery of argon. When this failed, the two set up a machine to produce argon and after drawing off the helium and argon. This time they were especially careful to collect the cold residues that remained. The remaining gas was found to be inert and they immediately placed it in a Plucker tube connected to an induction coil and observed its spectrum. The bright yellow line with a greener tint than that of the helium line and a brilliant green line that did not coincide with any line of argon, helium, mercury, or hydrogen.

    Extractions: The Ramsays were thereafter to continue in military and public service down to the present day. They served in all the great campaigns of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries on the Continent, in Canada and in India. The ninth Earl was Governor of Canada from 1819 to 1828, and commander-in-chief of India from 1829 to 1832. His son also served as Governor General of India from 1847 to 1856, during a period of great expansion of British interest on the sub-continent. He was created Marquess of Dalhousie in 1849, but this title died with him in 1860, although the older earldom passed to a cousin from whom the present Earl descends. Fighting was not the only talent of this family. Andrew Ramsay, better known as the Chevalier de Ramsay, left Scotland for France in 1708. His academic excellence was soon recognised, and he became mentor to the Prince de Turenne. The King of France appointed him a Knight of the Order of St Lazarus, and for a time he was tutor to both the Jacobite princes, Charles Edward and Henry, later Cardinal York.
