Anderson RAMSAY, SIR WILLIAM MITCHELL (1851-1939), classical scholar and archaeologist and the foremost authority of his day on the topography, antiquities, and history of Asia Minor in ancient times, was born in Glasgow 15 March 1851, the Youngest son of Thomas Ramsay, by his wife, Jane, daughter of William Mitchell, both of Alloa. Ramsay's family had been bred to the law for three generations, his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather having all been advocates, his grandfather also procurator-fiscal of Clackmannanshire. His father died in 1857, and the family returned to its native shire to settle in a rural home near Alloa. In his education his eldest brother and his maternal Uncle, Andrew Mitchell, of Alloa, took active interest. From the Gymnasium, Old Aberdeen, he went on to the university of Aberdeen and then won a scholarship at St. John's College, Oxford: there he obtained a first class in classical moderations (1874) and in literae humaniores (1876). In his second year at Oxford (1874), he was enabled by the generosity of his maternal uncle to spend the long vacation at Goettingen, studying Sanskrit under a great scholar, Theodor Benfey. This was a critical period of his life: then for the first time, in his own words, he 'gained some insight into modern methods of literary investigation', and his 'thoughts ever since turned towards the border lands between European and Asiatic civilization'. A further stimulus was received from Henry Jardine Bidder, of St. John's, a man of incisive mind and speech, who first opened his eyes to the true spirit of Hellenism and so helped to fit him for the work which he had in view.

Extractions: William Ramsay is known for work that established a whole new group in the periodic tablevariously called over time inert, rare, or noble gases. In the last decade of the nineteenth century he and the famous physicist Lord Rayleigh (John William Strutt, 1842-1919)already known for his work on sound, light, and other electromagnetic radiationcarried out separate investigations, for which they received Nobel Prizes in 1904, Ramsay in chemistry and Lord Rayleigh in physics. Ramsay began his studies in his native city of Glasgow and completed a doctorate in chemistry at Tübingen, focusing on organic chemistry. On his return to Great Britain and his appointment to academic posts at the University of Bristol and then at University College, London, he became known for the inventiveness and scrupulousness of his experimental techniques, especially for his methods for determining the molecular weights of substances in the liquid state. In 1892 Ramsay's curiosity was piqued by Lord Rayleigh's observation that the density of nitrogen extracted from the air was always greater than nitrogen released from various chemical compounds. Ramsay then set about looking for an unknown gas in air of greater density, whichwhen he found ithe named argon. While investigating for the presence of argon in a uranium-bearing mineral, he instead discovered helium, which since 1868 had been known to exist, but only in the sun. This second discovery led him to suggest the existence of a new group of elements in the periodic table. He and his coworkers quickly isolated neon, krypton, and xenon from the earth's atmosphere.

In 1903, with Frederick Soddy , he noted the transmutation of radium into helium, which led to the discovery of the density and relative atomic mass of radium. Nobel prize 1904. Helium was known from spectrographic evidence to be present on the Sun but yet to be found on Earth. Certain uranium minerals were known to produce an unidentified inert gas on heating, and Ramsay obtained sufficient of the gas to send a sample to English scientist William Crookes for spectrographic analysis. Crookes confirmed that it was helium.

En 1880, il exerce comme professeur à Bristol, puis occupe à l'University College de Londres la chaire libérée par Williamson de 1887 à 1913, année où il cesse ses activités pour se retirer à High Wycombe. Ramsay semble, au début de sa camère, s'intéresser à la chimie organique; mais très vite, en fait dès son retour à Glasgow, il se met à étudier des gaz et des vapeurs, construisant un appareillage destiné à la préparation et à la manipulation des fluides gazeux. Ses travaux se caractérisent par leur homogénéité, toutes ses expériences visant avec ténacité le même objectif. Dès 1885, il étudie l'activité de divers catalyseurs dans les réactions gazeuses intervenant entre l'azote et l'oxygène d'une part, l'azote et l'hydrogène d'autre part. Ce sont ces travaux qui le rendent célèbre et lui valent le prix Nobel.
