He was awarded an honorary doctor’s degree at the Technical University of Budapest in 1989. The 1994 Nobel Prize was awarded to Olah “ for his contribution to carbocation chemistry”. Olah at a press conference in the Houses of Parliament (1995)

    Extractions: Olah was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1927, the son of Julius Olah and Magda Krasznai. After studying the humanities for many years, he finally found his calling in science while attending the Technical University of Budapest. Exams there were difficult, and those who failed were not allowed to continue. Labwork was also very intense and Olah received a sound foundation in chemistry, specifically organic synthesis. After graduation, working with a carbohydrate chemist, Olah suggested to his supervisor the use of fluorine containing carbohydrates for study. Fluorine chemistry, at the time, was very rare, as most fluoro-chemicals such as FSO3H and BF3 were unavailable. Olah had to prepare them himself in a makeshift lab he referred to as the "balcony laboratory," since it was fashioned from a balcony storage room.
