Extractions: New Entry : 05/16/2000 Biochemist Kary Mullis is best known for winning the 1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on initiating and controlling a process called the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a chemical technique that allows scientists to replicate bits of DNA or even specific genes in large quantities over a very short period of time. "His discovery, " writes a contributor to Contemporary Heroes and Heroines, "soon led to the production of genetic material from dead insects, an event that in turn inspired the storyline of the movie Jurassic Park. " On a more commercial level, the contributor continues, "its applications extend into many other scientific fields (especially medical diagnostics), and it plays an important role in law enforcement and even historical research." However, the biochemist is also known as a maverick with little respect and little patience for bureaucracy. Mullis's career began while he was working on his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. "In Berkeley at that time [the late 1960s and early 1970s] there was a great deal of interest in the effects of hallucinogenic drugs, " reports the Contemporary Heroes and Heroines contributor; "Mullis taught a controversial neurochemistry class on the subject." After receiving his degree in 1973, Mullis taught at the University of Kansas Medical School and at the University of California at San Francisco, and then entered the private research field, joining Cetus Corporation. "At Cetus, Mullis was bored by the routine demands of corporate life, " writes the contributor to

Extractions: Text modifications and image by Greg Pryor. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for contributions to the development of methods within DNA-based chemistry, with half to Dr. Kary B. Mullis, La Jolla, California, U.S.A., for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, and half to Professor Michael Smith, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, for his fundamental contributions to the establishment of oligonucleotide-based, site-directed mutagenesis and its development for protein studies. Decisive progress in gene technology through two new methods: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and site-directed mutagenesis The chemical methods that Kary B. Mullis and Michael Smith have each developed for studying the DNA molecules of genetic material have further hastened the rapid development of genetic engineering. The two methods have greatly stimulated basic biochemical research and opened the way for new applications in medicine and biotechnology. The applications of Mullis' PCR method are already many.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work in He has advocated that concentrations be measured in "number of things per milliliter" instead of " moles per milliliter" because of the arbitrariness of Avogadro's number Kary Mullis holds several highly idiosyncratic views. In his 1998 essay collection Dancing Naked in the Mind Field he relates experiences that he attributes to space alien visitors. He also claims that the evidence behind astrology has not been adequately appreciated. Kary Mullis is among a scientific minority that claims that there is not sufficient evidence for stating that HIV causes AIDS (see AIDS reappraisal Mullis is also an avid surfer and drug -user, as mentioned in his autobiography. "We tortured the cows. We sliced apples and slipped them onto the electric fence that contained them in the newer parts of the pasture."

Extractions: Category of Safety Engineering and Disaster Mitigation Dr. Frank Press (United States) President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Born in 1924. Dr. Press was the first to propose that the dispersion of long period earthquake surface wave motion could be used as a tool for studying the structure of the earth's crust and upper mantle. Analyzing surfaces waves, Dr. Press verified that the occurrence of an earthquake is fault motion itself. It was the beginning of modern seismology and the forerunner for studies on earthquake mechanisms. Dr. Press was the leader in the promotion of scientific research and development in the area of disaster mitigation. As demonstrated by his efforts for International Geophysical Year (IGY) and Worldwide Standardized Seismograph Network (WWSSN), he recognized the importance of international cooperation in disaster sciences. He conceived and has been a leader in promoting the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR), a UN program in which the international community, under the auspices of the United Nations, will pay special attention during the last decade of the century to fostering international disaster (such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, volcanos, landslides, windstorms and wildfires) reduction. Extractions: The first American "test tube" baby conceived through in vitro fertilization was born on this morning, a 5-lb 12-oz girl, at Norfolk General Hospital. The term "in vitro" is Latin for "in glass," because conception takes place in a laboratory dish. The U.S. procedure was performed by the Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, which now draws patients from around the world with its advanced and comprehensive treatment of reproductive disorders, male and female. In vitro fertilization was a medical breakthrough because it helped doctors overcome intractable problems with a woman's fallopian tubes or a man's sperm count. The world's first "test-tube" baby, Louise Brown, was born in England, on 25 July 1978. Kary B. Mullis Kary B(anks) Mullis is an American biochemist , cowinner of the 1993 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a simple technique that allows a specific stretch of DNA to be copied billions of times in a few hours. Mullis developed PCR in 1983. PCR has extremely wide applications. In medical diagnostics PCR helps identify the causative agent of a bacterial or viral infection directly from a very small sample of genetic material. PCR is used to screen for genetic disorders. Evolutionary biologists employ PCR to study minute amounts of DNA extracted from the fossil remains of ancient species. Forensic scientists use PCR to identify crime suspects or victims from minute traces of tissue. The technique was also an important tool in gene sequencing.
