En 1907 fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Física por la creación de instrumentos de alta precisión y por la realización de importantes investigaciones con ellos, convirtiéndose en el primer ciudadano estadounidense en conseguir este premio. Michelson nació en Strelno (actualmente Strzelno, Polonia); llegó a Estados Unidos siendo un niño y estudió en la Academia Naval de Estados Unidos y en las universidades de Berlín, Heidelberg y París. Fue profesor de física en la Universidad Clark desde 1889 hasta 1892, y desde 1892 hasta 1929 dirigió el departamento de física de la Universidad de Chicago. Determinó la velocidad de la luz con un alto grado de precisión, con instrumentos creados por él. En 1887 Michelson inventó el interferómetro, que utilizó en el famoso experimento del éter realizado con el químico estadounidense Edward Williams Morley. En aquella época, la mayoría de los científicos creían que la luz viajaba como ondas a través del éter. También opinaban que la Tierra viajaba por el éter. El experimento Michelson-Morley demostró que dos rayos de luz enviados en diferentes direcciones desde la Tierra se reflejaban a la misma velocidad. De acuerdo con la teoría del éter, los rayos se habrían reflejado a velocidades distintas. De esta forma, el experimento demostró que el éter no existía.     Extractions: Albert Abraham Michelson (1852 - 1931) Albert Abraham Michelson nasceu a 19 de dezembro de 1852, em Strelno, na Polônia. Quando ele contava dois anos de idade, seus pais, Samuel e Rosalie, emigraram para os Estados Unidos da América. Estabeleceram-se em São Francisco, na Califórnia. Michelson, após completar a escola secundária, entrou para a Escola Naval, por nomeação especial do Presidente Grant, que criou para ele uma vaga extra. Aí foi instrutor de física e química de 1875 a 1879. Nessa época revelou grande interesse pelo estudo da luz e, aproveitando-se dos laboratórios à sua disposição, tentou a montagem de diversos aparelhos para medir a velocidade da luz e estudar fenômenos de interferência óptica. Acreditava-se, até a segunda metade do século XVII, que a velocidade da luz fosse infinita e que esta se propagasse num fluído hipotético chamado "éter". Vários cientistas nessa época levantaram a hipótese contrária, segundo a qual a velocidade da luz seria finita, faltando apenas uma prova científica para que a idéia fosse aceita. Entre os que se propuseram a determinar a velocidade da luz, encontra-se, inicialmente, Galileu, que em 1667 realizou a primeira tentativa neste sentido, sem contudo obter uma prova conclusiva. Anos mais tarde Olaf Roemer, cientista dinamarquês, obteve os primeiros resultados positivos (200 000 km/s), pela observação de eclipses nos satélites de Júpiter.

After two years of sea duty, he was assigned to the Naval Academy as an officer instructor in physics and chemistry. He conducted his famous determination of the speed of light at the Naval Academy before moving on to the physics department at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland in 1881. There he began his research on 'ether wind' that lead to his Nobel Prize in 1907. With the outbreak of WWI, he volunteered for active duty at the age of 65 and was attached to the Bureau of Ordnance with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. Midshipman Michelson is pictured on our homepage as is Michelson Hall, the science building named in his honor.
