Extractions: This year playing in division 4b at Eastbourne, there were the normal problems getting a team together. The team was heavily disabled with injuries to John and Mark, as well as Russell, the captain who was unavailable for singles. Despite this setback the team performed with good team spirit. In particular Mark Bright managed a couple of great singles rubbers. However at the end of play on the Sunday the team unfortunately missed promotion by 1 rubber, and therefore stay in the division. This season Russell would like to increase the squad and invites anyone who would like to be considered to contact him, as he intends to organise some practise sessions leading up to the championships. Despite having already won the league and thus gaining promotion to National Vets Division 2, the OXFORD 45s team went into the last match against Bedfordshire (away) determined not to lose their unbeaten record this season. The match lasted five hours with Bedfordshire finally winning 3-2. In the two singles matches Bruce Young saved 4 match points, in his match lasting two and three quarter hours. Jon Merrifield reversed a 1-6, 2-5 deficit to take the match to three sets. Phil Warr and Adrian Roberts, playing together for the first to took Bedfordshire first pair (unbeaten in County Vets for four years) to three sets. The Rubber results in the first round were; Singles - Bruce Young v D.Rawlingson 6-2, 6-7, 5-7. Jon Merrifield v Ian Holt 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Because scientists aren't able to extract sufficient quantities of peptides from natural sources for their experiments, a growing number of companies are custom-manufacturing peptides for research. Synthetic peptides are used for a variety of molecular biological applications, including monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies for immunological research, peptidomemetics, and the testing of prospective drugs in clinical trials. Researchers generally target a specific amino acid sequence of the protein they're working on and order that sequence in quantities ranging from a few milligrams to many grams, depending on the project. "We have customers throughout the research community," notes Mark Peterson, manager of commercial operations at Advanced ChemTech Inc., a Louisville, Ky.-based company that performs custom synthesis in addition to manufacturing and selling synthesizers.
