Extractions: Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Edwin Mattison McMillan The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1951 Edwin Mattison McMillan was born on September 18, 1907, at Redondo Beach, California. He is the son of Dr. Edwin Harbaugh McMillan, a physician, an his wife, Anne Marie McMillan who both came from the State of Maryland. The thesis he submitted for Ph. D. was in the field of molecular beams, and the problem he undertook as a National Research Fellow was the measurement of the magnetic moment of the proton by a molecular beam method. It was during 1945 that he had the idea of "phase stability" which led to the development of the synchroton and synchro-cyclotron; these machines have already extended the energies of artificially accelerated particles into the region of hundreds of MeV and have made possible many important researches. While serving in the Faculty of Physics at Berkeley, McMillan married Elsie Walford Blumer, a daughter of Dr. George Blumer, Dean Emeritus of the Yale Medical School. There are three children of the marriage- Ann Bradford, David Mattison, and Stephen Walker. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1951together with Glenn Seaborg "for their discoveries in the chemistry of the transuranium elements". Back To Main Page

Extractions: Edwin Mattison McMillan's life ended on September 7, 1991, after several years of declining health. He had, three months before, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his marriage to Elsie W. Blumer, and he was just 11 days short of 84 years of age. McMillan was one of the small group of scientists who in the second quarter of this century elevated the Berkeley Physics Department and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory to the front rank of science. He was born in Redondo Beach, California, the son of Edwin Harbaugh and Marie Mattison McMillan. He grew up in Pasadena, where his father practiced medicine, a fortunate circumstance for it brought him into contact with the California Institute of Technology at an early age. His interest in all things scientific was nourished by the excellent public programs and lectures at that institution. He entered Cal Tech in 1924 and majored in physics, but he studied more chemistry than was usual for a physics student and was greatly influenced by a close association with Linus Pauling, who was then a National Research Fellow. McMillan received the B.Sc. degree in 1928 and the M.Sc. a year later from Cal Tech. He continued his graduate studies at Princeton University, where he did research on molecular beams under the general direction of E.U. Condon. He received the Ph.D. in 1932 and was awarded a two-year National Research Fellowship.
