Archer John Porter Martin Archer John Porter Martin. Archer John Porter Martin (19102002). Britishbiochemist who was awarded (with RLM Synge) the Nobel Prize http://www.nobel-winners.com/Chemistry/archer_john_porter_martin.html
Extractions: Martin obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1936 and worked as a research chemist for the Wool Industries Research Association in Leeds from 1938 to 1946. He then became head of biochemical research at the Boots Pure Drug Company, Nottingham, and held the post until 1948, when he was appointed to the staff of the British Medical Research Council. From 1959 to 1970 he was director of Abbotsbury Laboratories, Ltd. Martin and Synge invented paper partition chromotography in 1944. Partition chromatography depends on the partition, or distribution, of each component of a mixture between two immiscible liquids. One of the liquids is held stationary by strong adsorption on the surface of a finely divided solid while the other flows through the interstices of the solid particles. Any substance that preferentially dissolves in the mobile liquid is more rapidly transported in the direction of flow than is a substance that has greater affinity for the stationary liquid. In 1953 Martin and A.T. James helped perfect gas chromatography, the separation of chemical vapours by differential absorption on a porous solid.

Extractions: Archer John Porter Martin was born on March 1st, 1910, in London where his father was a general medical practitioner. He attended Bedford School from 1921 to 1929 when he entered Cambridge University to graduate in 1932. After a year in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory he obtained a post at the Dunn Nutritional Laboratory, where he worked under L.J. Harris and Sir Charles Martin, and in 1938 he moved to the Wool Industries Research Association at Leeds. From 1946 to 1948 he was Head of the Biochemistry Division of the Research Department of Boots Pure Drug Company at Nottingham and in 1948 he joined the staff of the Medical Research Council, first at the Lister Institute and later at the National Institute for Medical Research. He was appointed Head of the Division of Physical Chemistry at the Institute in 1952 and he was Chemical Consultant from 1956 to 1959. Since 1959 he has been a Director of Abbotsbury Laboratories Ltd. Martin entered Cambridge University with the intention of becoming a chemical engineer but, due to the influence of Professor J.B.S. Haldane, then Reader of Biochemistry at Cambridge, he eventually specialized in biochemistry. His first researches, as an undergraduate, resulted in a method of detecting pyro-electricity by observing the attraction of a metal plate for crystals that had been immersed in liquid air. At Cambridge he worked on ultraviolet adsorption spectra and at the Nutritional Laboratory he was concerned with the attempted isolation of Vitamin E and in the pathological effects of prolonged Vitamin E deficiencies. In these latter studies he used solvent extraction and chromatographic methods which were to lay the foundation for his later work on chromatography. He also worked, along with others, on the B

Martin, Archer John Porter martin, archer john porter (1910 ). British biochemist who receivedthe 1952 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for work with Richard Synge http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/M/Martin/1.html
Extractions: Martin was born in London and studied at Cambridge. He has held both commercial and academic research posts; he worked at the Wool Industries Research Association in Leeds 1938-46, at the National Institute for Medical Research 1952-59, was director of the Abbotsbury Laboratory 1959-70, and taught at the University of Sussex 1973-78. Martin and Synge began in 1941 the development of partition chromatography for separating the components of complex mixtures. A drop of the solution to be analysed is placed at one end of a strip of filter paper and allowed to dry. That end of the strip is then immersed in a solvent, which deposits the various components of the mixture as it permeates the strip of paper. The dried strip is sprayed with a reagent that produces a colour change with the components; Martin and Synge used ninhydrin to reveal the positions of amino acids. The developed strip is called a chromatogram.
