Extractions: summa laude , e em três anos especializou-se em Neurologia e Psiquiatria. Em 1936 Mussolini emanou o " Manifesto pela Defesa da Raça ", assinado por dez "Cientistas" italianos. O manifesto foi logo seguido pela promulgação de leis que impediam o acesso à carreira acadêmica e profissional dos cidadãos italianos " não Arianos ". Depois de um breve período passado em Bruxelas como hóspede de um instituto neurológico, Rita Levi voltou para Turim em 1940 (pouco antes da invasão da Bélgica por parte da Alemanha) para juntar-se à sua Família. O pesado bombardeamento de Turim por parte das forças aéreas Anglo-Americanas em 1941, forçou a decisão da família de mudar-se para uma pequena casa de campo onde Rita reconstruiu seu mini laboratório e voltou aos seus experimentos. Em 1943, a invasão da Itália por parte da Alemanha, forçou de novo a família a transferir-se para Florença onde viveu escondida até o fim da guerra. Em Florença Rita Levi era constantemente em contato com muitos queridos e íntimos amigos, e com corajosos revolucionários (partigiani) do " Partido de Ação Em 1986 Rita Levi-Montalcini recebeu o Prêmio Nobel pela Fisiologia ou Medicina "Por suas descobertas sobre a evolução dos fatores"

It has always been distinguished by the exactitude, even punctitio, of its anatomical descriptions. An experiment by one of the great masters of embryology could be made the text of a discourse on scientific method. But something is wrong, or has been wrong. There is no theory of development in the sense in which Mendelism is a theory that accounts for the results of breeding experiments. There has therefore been little sense of progression or timeliness about embryological research. Of many papers delivered at embryological meetings, however good they may be in themselves, one too often feels that they might have been delivered five years beforehand without making anyone much the wiser, or deferred for five years without making anyone conscious of a great loss." This feeling of frustration, so incisively conveyed by these considerations by P. Medawar, pervaded in the forties the field of experimental embryology which had been enthusiastically acclaimed in the mid-thirties, when the upper lip of the amphibian blastopore brought this area of research to the forefront of the biological stage. The side branch of experimental neuroembryology, which had stemmed out from the common tree and was entirely devoted to the study of the trophic interrelations between neuronal cell populations and between these and the innervated organs and tissues, was then in its initial vigorous growth phase. It in turn suffered from a sharp decrease in the enthusiasm that had inflamed the pioneers in this field, ever since R.G. Harrison delivered his celebrated lecture on this topic at the Royal Society in London in 1935.

She received her medical degree from the University of Turin in 1936. Levi-Montalcini completed residency in neurology and psychiatry, and was on staff in Turin before and after World War II. In 1947, at the invitation of Viktor Hamburger, she joined Washington University School of Medicine as a research associate in zoology. She spent the next 30 years in St. Louis, joining the faculty as an associate professor in 1956. She became a full professor in 1958 and retired in 1977. In 1969, she became director of the Institute of Cell Biology of the Italian National Council of Research, in Rome. Onorevoli colleghi, comunico che ho ufficialmente ricevuto, tramite il Segretario generale della Presidenza della Repubblica, il decreto di nomina da parte del Capo dello Stato a senatore a vita della signora Rita Levi Montalcini. (Vivi, prolungati applausi) Esprimo la soddisfazione dell'Assemblea, che già si è manifestata con questo applauso, per l'onore che ci viene fatto, a noi come Senato e a tutta la Nazione. Esprimo anche il mio compiacimento personale essendo la senatrice Rita Levi Montalcini persona che conosco direttamente e di cui apprezzo le qualità scientifiche, di organizzazione culturale, di impegno civile e anche di donna impegnata e dal grande calore umano. Noi tutti la conosceremo personalmente tra poco. Ricordo che Rita Levi Montalcini iniziò i suoi studi a Torino, allieva del famoso professor Giuseppe Levi, che continuò lì i suoi studi dopo la laurea e che poi fu costretta ad abbandonare questi studi a seguito delle leggi razziali. Prima impiantò una sorta di laboratorio personale privato in casa propria e poi si trasferì all'estero, prima in Belgio, a Bruxelles, e poi negli Stati Uniti, nella Washington University di Saint Louis nel Missouri. Fu proprio lì che la signora Levi Montalcini, con le sue ricerche, scoprì il fattore di crescita neuronale, noto con la sigla NGF, che poi le procurò il premio Nobel nel 1986. Già quando era negli Stati Uniti cominciò a dirigere il laboratorio di biologia cellulare del CNR in Italia; rientrata poi definitivamente in Italia nel 1977, divenne anche presidente del prestigioso Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana. Credo che sia stata l'unico presidente donna di questo istituto. Famosa per il suo impegno civile e per un libro di grande divulgazione e di grande interesse che esprime davvero un grande calore umano, il cui titolo è "L'elogio dell'imperfezione".

Scientific activity Beside its role on growth, differentiation and function in the peripheral and central nervous system, NGF acts also on cells of the immune system and it is involved in inflammatory responses. Using blood samples of patients affected by rheumathoid arthritis, and tissue of rodents with experimentally-induced arthritis we have characterized the effect of this autoimmune inflammatory disorders on the basal NGF levels within the synovia, in the synovial fluid and blood circulation.We have also investigate the correlation between the amount of NGF and well estabilished inflammatory mediators, notably cytokines (IL-1 and TNF) and neuropeptides (SP). Scientific results NGF and Ethanol: Our results showed that there is an effect of alcohol consumption on brain nerve growth factor (NGF) and the NGF-target cells of adult male rats and pups exposed prenatally to ethanol. It is hypothesized that NGF, a trophic agent for the survival and maintenance of basal cholinergic neurons, might be affected by the neurodegenerative events wich occur during ethanol consumption. To test this hypothesis, we used adult rats exposed to ethanol for 16 weeks and pregnant rats exposed to ethanol for six days. Our experiment show that ethanol ingestion causes a reduction of NGF in the hippocampus, of choline acetyltransferase activity in both the septum and hippocampus, and in the distribution of NGF receptor in the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons. The results indicate that the damaging effect of alcohol on forebrain cholinergic neurons is also associated with impairment of the central NGF-target structures.
