Extractions: INTRODUCTIONS Chemistry, the science of the next millennium Chemistry will undoubtedly remain the central science in the 21st century. After bringing to mankind the fundamental discoveries which have changed our daily life for the last two centuries, it will now be at the heart of a new scientific era, where many sciences will merge and cross-fertilize for the benefit of innovation. Thus, chemical creativity and knowledge will be needed everywhere. However, this science, fascinating as it may be, fails, like some others, to attract young people, and suffers from a lack of information and therefore of understanding and enthusiasm from the general public. If Europe is to prosper in the 21st century and therefore provide the wealth and jobs which we will surely need in a world driven by global competition, it needs to cope fully with the challenges of scientific innovation, especially in chemistry. For that, it will need both to attract young and creative people, the scientists of tomorrow, and to drive popular support and balanced understanding. The "CHEMistry for Life"

Lehn was a chemist from France and received his Ph.D. from the University of Strasbourg in 1963. He was a professor at Louis Pasteur University from 1970-78 and the College de France from 1979-present. Lehn was the leading researcher in the development of and creation of artificial enzymes. This was an expansion on the work of Charles J. Pedersen. Lehn received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for the development and application of molecules that have highly selective structural interactions. These selective structures recognize and make complexes with molecules that the chemist wanted it to. His father, Pierre Lehn was a baker. His mother Marie kept the house and the shop. He was the oldest of four sons and helped out in the shop with his first brother. He grew up in Rosheim during the years of the second world war, went to primary school after the war and, at age eleven, he entered high school, the College Freppel, located in Obernai. He also became interested in sciences, especially chemistry, so that he obtained the baccalaureat in Philosophy in July 1957 and in Experimental Sciences in September of the same year. Having obtained his degree of Docteur es Sciences (Ph. D. ) in June of 1963, he spent a year in the laboratory of Robert Burns Woodward at Harvard University, where he took part in the immense enterprise of the total synthesis of Vitamin B . After his return to Strasbourg, he began to work in the area of physical organic chemistry.
