Extractions: Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota, on August 8, 1901, the son of educated Norwegian immigrants. He received his B.S. degree from the University of South Dakota and his M.A. in physics from the University of Minnesota. He continued his studies at the University of Chicago for two years, then transferred to Yale, where he received his Ph.D. in 1925. In 1928, Lawrence went to the University of California as an associate professor and in 1930, at the age of 29, he became the youngest full professor on the Berkeley faculty. His doctoral thesis was in photoelectricity. Later, he made the most precise determination, to that time, of the ionization potential of the mercury atom. With J.W. Beams he devised a method of obtaining time intervals as small as three billionths of a second, and he applied this technique to study the early stages of electric spark discharge. He originated a new and more precise method for measuring e/m, which was perfected by F.G. Dunnington. Lawrence championed interdisciplinary collaboration: he strongly encouraged physicists to work with biologists and he set up his own radioisotope distribution system, supplying isotopes to hundreds of doctors and numerous institutions in the prewar period. With his brother John, director of the University's medical center, he used the cyclotron to irradiate malignant tissues with neutrons.

Here he soon invented one of the most essential apparatus of nuclear physics: the cyclotron (1931, patent #1,948,384). At that time, particle accelerators-devices used to shoot electrons, charged protons or ions at atomic nuclei-were linear: that is, the particles were shot at the target by a burst of static electricity along a straight path. Lawrence and others realized that they could give the particles muchgreater speed within a smaller space if they could build momentum by whirling them in a spiral before releasing them. Lawrence made this possible by inventing the "cyclotron." In this device, an electromagnetic field keeps a beam of charged atomic particles in orbit within a structure made of two opposed D-shapes, while a radio-frequency electric charge boosts the particles' speed each time they cross the gap between "dees." In this way, particles can be brought to very great speeds before they are released to collide with the target. By analyzing such collisions between charged particle and nucleus, scientists learn much about the structure and characteristics of atoms, and can even produce artificial radioactivity.

Extractions: Ernest Orlando Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota, on August 8, 1901, the son of Carl G. and Gunda (Jacobson) Lawrence. His father, a school superintendent, was in turn the son of a schoolteacher, Ole Lawrence, an immigrant from Norway to Madison, Wisconsin, in the year 1840. The father of Gunda Jacobson was also an immigrant from Norway, a South Dakota pioneer. Ernest Lawrence died in Palo Alto, following surgery, on August 27, 1958. He is survived by Mary (Blumer) Lawrence, whom he married in 1932, and by six children, John, Margaret, Mary, Robert, Barbara, and Susan, born between the years 1934 and 1949. Lawrence attended St. Olaf College and later the University of South Dakota, where he received the A.B. degree in 1922. His Ph.D. degree was awarded by Yale University in 1925, after previous graduate work by Lawrence at the University of Minnesota and the University of Chicago. After three more years at Yale, two as National Research Fellow and one as Assistant Professor of Physics, Lawrence joined the Department of Physics at Berkeley as Associate Professor, and two years later, at the age of 29, he was promoted to Professor, the youngest full professor in the University of California. In February, 1929, only six months after his arrival in Berkeley, Lawrence conceived the basic principle of the cyclotron, and in September, 1930, resonance effects obtained with a small model built by Lawrence and Edlefsen were reported to the National Academy of Sciences. This discovery signaled the beginning of a whole new era in physics, which has led to the present giant cyclotrons and synchrotrons; to the artificial disintegration of all the elements; to the production of hundreds of new isotopes, many of them already of great value in medical practice and in biological research; and finally to the release of nuclear energy and its almost limitless uses in both peace and war.

Extractions: Materials Science Division The Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Materials Sciences Division is seeking a Materials Scientist to conduct original research in applied and basic metal/oxide interfaces under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Responsibilities include conducting research and developing innovative approaches on high temperature wetting of molten metal or oxides on metal and oxide substrates; designing and fabricating test specimens and implementing testing procedures used to study basic atomic phenomena at the interface; and participating in the development of bioactive materials and bioactive coatings on metallic materials as well as evaluating their properties. You will also publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present research at conferences and develop collaborations with colleagues. The successful candidate will have demonstrated scientific expertise as evidenced by a strong publication record in materials science with emphasis in the fields of ceramic and glass science. Substantial experience in high temperature research on wetting and ceramics and ceramic/metal materials processing and characterization is important. Experience in the use of high temperature furnaces and techniques such as dilatometry, DTA-TGA, Electron Microprobe, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS, AFM and XRD are also required. Ph.D. in physics or Materials Science or related field, working knowledge of interfacial fracture mechanics and experience in mechanical testing and specimen machining preferred.
