It seemed, therefore, that an investigation of the phenomena occurring in tungsten lamps, carried out with a view of reaching a clear understanding of the causes of the failure of the lamps, might possibly open the way to the discovery of methods by which the efficiency could be greatly improved." October 1913. Irving Langmuir received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1906 from the University of Göttingen. He studied under Walther Nernst who had invented a new type of incandescent lamp only a few years before. After graduating, Langmuir took a teaching position at the Stevens Institute of Technology but left in 1909 to accept a position at the General Electric Research Lab. Ironically, he soon invented a lamp that made the Nernst Lamp (among others) obsolete. In 1910 Langmuir began to experiment with bendable tungsten wire developed by his colleague William Coolidge. Langmuir's goal was to find a way to keep tungsten lamps from "blackening," or growing dim as the inside of the bulb became coated with evaporated tungsten. Though his work did not solve this problem it did result in a coiled tungsten filament mounted in a gas-filled lamp the same design still used today.

Extractions: In 1892, the family moved to Paris. Irving's intellectual curiosity was stifled by the traditional, rigid schooling he encountered there. He was happy to return to Philadelphia and the Chestnut Hill Academy where a special teacher was able to rekindle his former fervor. He then attended and graduated from the Pratt Institute's Manual Training High School in Brooklyn, and went on to receive a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Columbia School of Mines in 1903. Langmuir chose Gottingen University for his post graduate work. This decision would prove to be a fortunate one because working under Walther Nernst, who was both a theoretician and an inventor, led Langmuir to the applied research that became the foundation of his career. He received his PhD in 1906 for research done using the "Nernst glower", an electric lamp invented by Nernst. The goal of his research at Gottingen was to determine what happened to various gases produced in the presence of a hot platinum wire. This laid the groundwork for many of his later interests.

His early education was obtained in various schools and institutes in the USA, and in Paris. He graduated as a metallurigcal engineer from the School of Mines at Columbia University in 1903. Langmuir's studies embraced chemistry, physics, and engineering and were largely the outgrowth of studies of vacuum phenomena. In seeking the atomic and molecular mechanisms of these he investigated the properties of absorbed films and the nature of electric discharges in high vacumm and in certain gases at low pressures. His work on filaments in gases led directly to the invention of the gas-filled incandescent lamp and to the discovery of atomic hydrogen. He later used the latter in the development of the atomic hydrogen welding process. He was the first to observe the very stable adsorbed monatomic films on tungsten and platinum filaments, and was able, after experiments with oil films on water, to formulate a general theory of adsorbed films. He also studied the catalytic properties of such films. Langmuir's work on space charge effects and related phenomena led to many important technical developments which have had a profound effect on later technology. In chemistry, his interest in reaction mechanism cause him to study structure and valence, and he contributed to the development of the Lewis theory of shared electrons.
