In the summer of 1986 the Laboratory of Neurobiology became an Institute, which was transferred from the School of Medicine to under the Deanship of Academic Affairs. Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin In 1936, at age 22, Hodgkin began investigating the giant axon of the squid. He wanted to find out how messages travel INSIDE neurons. The giant axon made experiments feasible. In 1952 he and his collaborators published a series of articles that explained the details of how messages travel INSIDE neurons. In 1963, Hodgkin shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Andrew Huxley and Sir John Carew Eccles. In 1970, Hodgkin became president of the United Kingdom Royal Society.

Extractions: A Tribute to Barbara Solandt Griffin Barbara Mary Solandt Griffin (née Garrard) passed away December 4, 1997, after a lengthy illness. Barbara was born March 4, 1911, in Luton, England. She attended Newnam College at Cambridge University on scholarships. Barbara delighted in recalling how women were not really in Cambridge but registered in womens colleges and received equivalent degrees. This changed in the early sixties and Barbara received her unencumbered BA and MA at that time. In classes, the young women sat in the first few rows and the professors began every lecture with Gentlemen, ... while staring over the heads of the female students. Barbara completed her BA in 1933, a Natural Science Tripos, with a double first. After a year teaching at a girls school in the inner city of London, Barbara did postgraduate research in osmoregulation in Fundulus, the killifish, with Professor A.V. Hill at University College , London, and Sir Henry Dale at Cambridge. Sir Henry Dale, Professor A.V. Hill and Sir Bernard Katz, a fellow member of the research team, all won Nobel Prizes. When she heard that Dr. Katz had been awarded a Nobel prize she mused that she must be brighter than she thought she was to have kept up with three Nobel laureates. Barbara met her husband-to-be, Donald Young Solandt, a Canadian, in Dales lab. Dr. Solandt became a Professor of
