Extractions: Dean Kamen is an American inventor who has invented many revolutionary devices and holds over 35 U.S. patents. He developed the portable medical infusion pump, which allows patients to receive medication, like insulin, away from the hospital, and has allowed diabetic women to carry and deliver babies much more safely. Kamen designed the iBot, a revolutionary wheelchair (that uses gyroscopes and computers) that the user "wears" - it allows increased mobility (it can even climb stairs) and improved social interaction (the user can "stand"). He also invented intravascular stents (devices that hold blocked arteries open) and the portable kidney dialysis machine, which has enabled kidney dialysis patients to avoid long hospital visits - they can do the dialysis themselves while they sleep. The segway, his new personal vehicle, may revolutionize transportation.

WFEO - CIC INTERVIEW. Dr. jerome karle Nobel Laureate and Keynote Speaker. BIOGRAPHY.jerome karle was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 18, 1918. http://www.coi-tn.org/wfeo-cic/congress_newsletter/newsletter_1_5.htm
Extractions: of the information society in Africa should be the role of leadership" Congress Newsletter presents an interview of today's keynote speaker Dr. Jerome Karle, Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1985 for his work in crystal structure analysis. Apart from his scientific endeavors, Dr. Karle has been associ-ated in various ways with a number of groups and organizations that are concerned with social issues, including the Committee on Human Rights of the National Academy of Sciences, ChildRight Worldwide and Committee of Concerned Scientists. Dr. Karle is currently president of the World Innovation Foundation, which was founded by Glenn Theodore Seabourg and numbers several Nobel Laureates among its members. Our world is currently witnessing a lot of inequalities, and the economic gap between developed and developing countries is ever widening. There is a serious risk that the divide will become unbridgeable if tough measures are not taken and if stakeholders are not conscious of the necessity for these measures. Scientists and engineers hold a great responsibility in this respect because technology and science are at the origin of this divide. With this in mind, what message are you going to present to the engineers attending the Congress?
