Extractions: PURSUIT OF PEACE ... RESOURCES In 1921, the Royal Swedish Academy awarded Alfred Einstein the Nobel Prize in physics for his experiments with the photoelectric effect. (CNN) A century ago, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy, the founder of a French peace society that laid a foundation for the United Nations. Today, as the Nobel committee prepares to announce its 100th awards, the organizations seeded by those two men are more viable than ever. So is the work of dozens of other Nobel laureates recognized over the decades in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics. Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Martin Luther King Jr., Linus Pauling, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Nelson Mandela and Samuel Beckett are some of the well-known recipients of Nobel prizes. While the prizes are among the most prestigious awards in the world, they are not without controversy. Nobel laureates were often at the forefront of dramatic change in the 20th century, which saw an accelerated rate of scientific discoveries, along with two world wars and tremendous social upheaval.
Extractions: Former Bell Labs Scientist Steven Chu Wins Nobel Prize Holmdel, N.J (October, 1997) An idea that sprang up over lunch at a Bell Labs cafeteria a little more than a decade ago has led Steven Chu to the most coveted honor in science. On Oct. 15, the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Chu, now at Stanford University, and two others, William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, for their development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Steven Chu The research that drew the attention of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences began at Bell Labs in Holmdel. A dozen years ago, Arthur Ashkin and Chu used to discuss physics regularly at the Holmdel cafeteria. They were interested in manipulating atoms at low temperatures. An idea that arose during one of those lunches led to a series of experiments by Chu, Ashkin, John Bjorkholm, Alex Cable, and Leo Holberg. Chu left Bell Labs in 1987 to take up a professorship at Stanford, where he continued his work in low-temperature physics. Ashkin Pioneered "Optical Trapping"

Extractions: Literature is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." Kamiokande The first underground solar neutrino observatory in Japan (predecessor to today's SuperKamiokande), this experiment helped establish that neutrinos have mass. The father of the project, Masatoshi Koshiba, is one of the 2002 nobel laureates in physics. http://www-sk.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/doc/kam/kamiokande.html
Extractions: KAMIOKANDE About Kamioka Underground Observatory Purpose of Research System Used for Detection Achievements About K amioka Underground Observatory Construction of Kamioka underground observatory, the predecessor of the present Kamioka Observatory Institute for Cosmic Ray Research , University of Tokyo began in 1982 and was completed in April, 1983. The purpose of the observatory was to investigate the stability of matter, one of the most fundamental questions of elementary particle physics. Kamioka Underground Observatory was located 1,000 m underground of Mozumi Mine of the Kamioka Mining and Smelting Co. located in Kamioka-cho, Gifu, Japan. The detector (KAMIOKANDE: Kamioka N ucleon D ecay E xperiment) was a tank which contained 3,000 tons of pure water and had about 1,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) attached to the inner surface. The size of the tank was 16.0 m in height and 15.6 m in diameter. The PMTs collect the pale blue light called cerenkov light which is emitted by high-velocity charged particles travelling as fast as light in the water. An upgrade of the detector was started in 1985 to observe elementary particles called neutrino of cosmic origin. As a result, the detector had become hightly sensitive and had succeeded in detecting neutrinos from a supernova explosion which occured in the Large Magellanic Cloud in Febrary 1987. Solar neutrinos were observed in 1988 adding to the advancements in neutrino astronomy and neutrino astrophysics.

Extractions: ZURICH Elias Canetti, the reclusive writer who won the 1981 Nobel Prize in literature, died Sunday. He was 89. Mr. Canetti, a Bulgarian-born British citizen who wrote in German, was buried Wednesday in Zurich beside Irish author James Joyce. He went into seclusion after he won the prize. Mr. Canetti began writing dramas and novels in the early 1930s, but developed a wide following among German readers only in 1960 with the publication of the first volume of his major work, "Masse und Macht" (Crowds and Power). A nightmarish novel, "Die Blendung" (Auto da Fe), which he wrote in the early 1930s, was not published in Vienna until 1963. But his drama, "Die Hochzeit" (The Wedding), was published in 1932, and two years later he completed his "Komodie der Eitelkeit" (Comedy of Vanity). He was born on July 25, 1905, in Rustchuk, Bulgaria. In 1911, he moved with his parents to Manchester, England. When his father died two years later, he moved to Vienna, where he attended school before continuing his education in Zurich and Frankfurt.

Extractions: I went to elementary school in Ottawa, and then to a private secondary school. When we moved back to the United States in 1933, I went to private schools in New York City and on Long Island, and then completed my high school education at the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. While I was there I became deeply interested in photography, and indeed the most noteworthy event in my early life was winning first, third, fourth and seventh prizes in an international competition for college and high school students. Our family life was certainly not intellectual. My father had not even completed high school when he started as an office boy working for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and I am not sure that my mother completed high school. Nevertheless, she was an exciting person, intelligent, intellectually curious, and she played an important part in my intellectual development. My aunt and uncle were, and in the case of my aunt (Adelaide North) still is, a powerful influence. They introduced me to classical music and my aunt continues to be, to this day, a very special person in my life.

WFotW ~ Introduction To Faulkner On The Web An Introduction to William Faulkner on the Web, an online resource devoted to the nobel Prizewinning novelist. http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~egjbp/faulkner/intro.html
Extractions: An Introduction William Faulkner on the Web is intended as an evolving guide to the life and works of William Faulkner, by all accounts one of America's greatest writers. His apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County , setting for most of his fiction and patterned after his real-life home in Oxford and Lafayette County, Mississippi, is perhaps the most famous address in American literature; it is a familiar location to literature students of all ages who encounter it in such often-anthologized stories as " Barn Burning " and " A Rose for Emily ." Cinema buffs still enjoy films such as To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep which Faulkner co-wrote. Visitors from around the world come here to visit Rowan Oak , his home in Oxford, and to attend the annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference at the University of Mississippi each August. Most important, though, are his novels
