He tried to reform the nation through campaigns against alcoholism and absenteeism, but he died after little more than a year in office. He was replaced by party loyalist Konstantin Chernenko , who also died after a year in office. An Andropov protege, Mikhail Gorbachev , became general secretary of the CPSU in Mar., 1985. Gorbachev inherited a country with daunting economic and foreign policy troubles. In the first nine months of his tenure he replaced 40% of the regional-level leadership. Like his mentor Andropov, he unleashed a vigorous campaign against alcohol use. Like Khrushchev, he approved measures aimed at loosening social restraints. The measures, which Gorbachev called glasnost ("openness") and perestroika ("restructuring"), were expected to invigorate the Soviet economy by increasing the free flow of goods and information. Glasnost received an immediate challenge whentor at Chernobyl exploded, spewing radioactive material over a large area. The Soviet government initially tried to cover up the extent of the disaster, but Gorbachev dramatically ended the cover-up by removing all controls on reporting. The basic poverty of the Soviet people, the waste of the country's resources, the unpopularity of the Afghan conflict were openly discussed for the first time.

Following in the footsteps of such past rulers as Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Stalin, and Brezhnev, Gorbachev inherited a stagnating economy, an entrenched bureaucracy, and a population that had lived in fear and mistrust of their previous leaders. Gorbachev's first actions were to shut down the production and sale of vodka and to ardently pursue Andropov's anticorruption campaign; one of the first to go was Leningrad party boss Grigory Romanov. For the 40 million Russian Orthodox and people of other religious beliefs, Gorbachev stated that "believers have the full right to express their convictions with dignity." On 1 Dec. 1989, Gorbachev became the first Soviet leader to set foot in the Vatican. In a historic meeting with Pope John Paul II, Gorbachev promised to open diplomatic relations with the Vatican and pledged that the government soon would pass a law guaranteeing freedom of religion for all believers. In one of his speeches in Rome, Gorbachev expressed: "We need spiritual values; we need a revolution of the mind. . . . No one should interfere in matters of the individual's conscience.

In the first of these two great stories, the man with the birthmark shaped like a map of the United States admitted the following: "We, including I, were saying, 'Capitalism is moving toward a catastrophe, whereas we are developing well.' Of course, that was pure propaganda. In fact, our country was lagging behind." In the second story, Gorbachev really reams Bill Clinton and praises George W. Bush. All the American socialists, leftists, and environmentalists are going to be totally devastated and shattered when they learn that Mikhail Gorbachev praised Dub, bashed Clinton and admits communism was never anything other than propaganda. It was never substantive, it was never real - other than the tens of millions the system starved. Yes, it was very real in terms of the tyranny and the dictatorship. But in terms of its promise, it was smoke and mirrors - and Gorbachev is admitting it! This is why he had to open up that environmentalist extremist think tank. That's the new home of communism, where they tell you what you can do with your land and your income. His goals haven't changed, folks, so I'd be very wary of this. Remember, Gorby did not defeat or end communism. Maggie Thatcher and Ronaldus Magnus did that.
