He graduated in chemistry in 1937 at the University of North Carolina , and became doctor of biochemistry at the Northwestern University in 1940. From 1956 to 1988, he was professor of pharmacology at the State University of New York In 1978, Furchgott discovered a substance in endothelial cells that relaxes blood vessels, calling it endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF). By 1986, he had worked out EDRF's nature and mechanism of action, and determined that EDRF was in fact nitric oxide (NO), an important compound in many aspects of cardiovascular physiology. For his groundbreaking discoveries, he was awarded in 1991 the International Awards for achievement in medical research, the in 1996, and then in 1998 the Nobel Prize in Medicine Furchgott has three children. Currently (2004), he lives in Brooklyn

Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad for their discoveries concerning "nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system." Ferid Murad, MD and pharmacologist, now in Houston, Texas, analyzed how nitroglycerin and related vasodilating compounds act and discovered in 1977 that they release nitric oxide, which relaxes smooth muscle cells. He was fascinated by the concept that a gas could regulate important cellular functions and speculated that endogenous factors such as hormones might also act through NO. However, there was no experimental evidence to support this idea at the time. Robert F. Furchgott

Furchgott, Ph.D., adjunct professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, has won a share of the Nobel Prize for Medicine. He and two colleagues discovered that nitric oxide acts as a signal for the cardiovascular system, the effects of which range from treating heart disease and shock to the development of the anti-impotence drug, Viagra. "We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Furchgott as a member of our department," says James D. Potter, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the University of Miami. "He is one of 'the giants of pharmacology,' and our students are extremely lucky." Furchgott, a professor of pharmacology at the State University of New York at Brooklyn, has spent the past eight winters at the University of Miami, running his pioneering research, collaborating with UM researchers, teaching seminars, and interacting with students. Furchgott is the second scholar associated with the University of Miami to win a Nobel-Issac Bashevis Singer won the prize for literature in 1978. In 1980, Furchgott discovered a substance in the endothelium, a layer of cells lining the innermost surface of blood vessels, which causes the underlying smooth muscle to relax. He called the substance endothelium-derived relaxing factor, or ERDF. This discovery gave the first indication of the crucial role that the endothelium plays in cardiovascular health and disease.

Formal presentation of the awards will take place Dec. 10 in Stockholm, Sweden. Furchgott, a pharmacologist at the State University of New York (SUNY), and two other Americans, Ferid Murad, M.D., and Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D., received the prize earlier this month for their work concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Furchgott came to the medical school in 1949 to work in the laboratory of world-renowned researcher Oliver H. Lowry, M.D., Ph.D., who was professor and head of the Department of Pharmacology. Furchgott previously had been an assistant professor of biochemistry at Cornell University. He joined the pharmacology department here as an assistant professor and was one of six faculty members in the 1950s. He was promoted to associate professor in 1952. He studied the effects of drugs on heart rate and rhythm, and, in particular, the action of drugs on the smooth muscle of blood vessels. F. Edmund Hunter, Jr., Ph.D., professor emeritus of pharmacology, recalled that Furchgott, now 82, was one of Lowry's first recruits after being named head of pharmacology.

Extractions: Lustman: Diabetes researcher School of Medicine investigators have found that a form of psychotherapy called cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for depression in patients with diabetes, restoring mental health and significantly improving control of blood sugar levels. Cognitive behavior therapy treats depression by involving patients in social and physical activities, teaching problem-solving skills to resolve stressful situations, identifying distorted thought patterns that lead to depression and replacing them with more positive and useful views. The researchers report the findings of this first-ever controlled trial of CBT in diabetes in the Oct. 15, 1998 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. They found that a 10-week program of therapy helped relieve depression in the majority of patients with diabetes. In the months after CBT, these patients also achieved better control of their blood glucose levels. Click to see entire article Robert F.
