Extractions: Home Edmond H. Fischer: P roteins are involved in most cell functions, and in most body functions such as digestion and movement. Because of proteins' important and varied functions, they are closely regulated by the body through enzymes. The enzymes fine tune the working of a protein by attaching one or more phosphate groups to it. This is called "phosphorylation." Fischer and Krebs first purified and described an enzyme which regulates proteins by removing phosphate groups from the protein-"reversible protein phosphorylation." They did this by studying how muscles get energy to contract. Reversible protein phosphorylation affects nearly all bodily processes such as blood pressure, brain signals, and immune responses to several diseases, including cancer. For information about Fischer and Krebs' work, see www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1992/press.html

Extractions: Nobel Laureate Edmond H. Fischer Professor Edmond H. Fischer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1992 together with Edwin G. Krebs for the discovery of reversible protein phosphorylation as a biological regulatory mechanism. Step by step, it has become evident that protein phosphorylation constitutes a fundamental mechanism, influencing all cellular functions. Reversible protein phosphorylation is responsible for regulation of processes as diverse as mobilization of glucose from glycogen, prevention of transplant rejection by cyclosporin, and development of a cancer form like chronic myeloic leukemia as well as a large number of other cellular processes. While at the UW in the 1960s, Sharpe published a pathbreaking paper containing the findings and conclusions now known as the Capital Asset Pricing Model for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Douglass C. North, who served on the faculty of the UW from 1950 to 1983, received the 1993 Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his research on the economic history of the U.S. and Europe, and for his contributions to understanding how economic and political institutions change over time. North joined the Center in Political Economy at Washington University in St.Louis in 1983; he remains professor emeritus at the UW.
