Extractions: Louis de Broglie's WaveLength of Quantum Theory Determination of the stable motion of electrons in the atom introduces integers, and up to this point the only phenomena involving integers in physics were those of interference and of normal modes of vibration. This fact suggested to me the idea that electrons too could not be considered simply as particles, but that frequency (wave properties) must be assigned to them also. Louis de Broglie, 1929, Nobel Prize Speech Thus I arrived at the following general idea which has guided my researches: for matter, just as much as for radiation, in particular light, we must introduce at one and the same time the corpuscle concept and the wave concept . In other words, in both cases we must assume the existence of corpuscles accompanied by waves. But corpuscles and waves cannot be independent, since, according to Bohr, they are complementary to each other; consequently it must be possible to establish a certain parallelism between the motion of a corpuscle and the propagation of the wave which is associated with it. Extractions: Prince Louis Victor Pierre de Broglie was born at Dieppe, France on the 15th, August 1892. His parents; Victor, Duc de Broglie and Pauline d'Armaille. After studying at the Lycee Janson of Sailly, he passed his school leaving examinations in 1909. He was a good student, and applied himself to his studies. First in Literary, then History in 1910 for his degree. By 1913, de Broglie had also received him science degree. Before he could continue with his education, he was conscripted by the army between 1914-1918. Upon leaving the war, de Broglie continued his studies of general physics. In 1924, at the Faculty of Sciences of Paris University, Louis de Broglie delivered an important thesis called 'Recherches sur la Theorie des Quanta'. This thesis obtained him his doctors degree. It contained a series of findings that he had obtained in the course of about two years work. The ideas that de Broglie gave voice to in his thesis were first look on with astonishment, they being new and daring. Eventually they were confirmed by other scientists, and served as a basis for developing the general theory that is today known as wave mechanics. This theory had an enormous impact on our knowledge of physical phenomena on the atomic scale. Between 1930 and 1950, de Broglie's work was chiefly devoted to the study of various extensions of his thesis work or wave mechanics: Dirac's electron, the new theory of light, the general theory of spin particles, applications of wave mechanics to nuclear physics and so forth. He wrote continuously on these subjects, becoming the author of at least 25 different books on the fields of his interests.

Extractions: After serving in the French army during World War I, Prince Louis-Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie studied physics at the University of Paris. Inspired by the wave-particle nature of light, de Broglie wondered if particles of matter could exhibit wave properties. Why couldn't electrons exhibit a wave-particle nature and be characterized by some frequency and wavelength? De Broglie's thinking was guided by Planck's (1901) ideas concerning radiation being made of discrete amounts of energy called quanta and Einstein's (1905) demonstration that E = mc2 as part of his work on relativity. De Broglie reasoned that energy is energy, regardless of its form. If particles have energy, they also must be governed by Planck's equation, E= hf. In 1924, de Broglie delivered his thesis entitled Researches on quantum theory and earned his doctorate. The ideas set out in his thesis were subsequently verified by Davisson and Germer in 1927. These workers were studying the diffraction patterns of electron beams reflected from crystalline surfaces. De Broglie's work served as a basis for developing the general theory known as wave mechanics and helped answer a major question not answered by the Bohr model - Why are electrons restricted to certain energy levels? For all his work, the Swedish Academy of Sciences conferred Louis de Broglie with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929.

Extractions: Louis de Broglie Prince Louis Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie belonged to an ancient and famous family. From the seventeenth century on, this family produced several religious leaders, two Marshals of France and two prime ministers. However, both Louis and his older brother Maurice broke from family tradition by taking an active interest in science. While his older brother played a role in this shift of interest, de Broglie also stated that the works of French mathematician Henri Poincare were decisive in changing his mind. The same year de Broglie completed a science degree from the University of Paris, he was drafted into military service. During World War I, de Broglie was stationed in Paris in the Eiffel Tower, working as a wireless operator. In 1924, de Broglie presented this analysis as his doctoral dissertation, entitled "Research on the Quantum Theory" to the University of Paris. He suggested on theoretical grounds that any particles, not only photons, traveling with a momentum p should have (in some sense) a wavelength given by the de Broglie relation: .lambda. = h p The faculty viewed his idea with skepticism, since there existed no experimental evidence to support his view. With the support and encouragement of Albert Einstein, however, de Broglie was awarded his degree and went on to publish his work. Einstein began to promote this analysis among other physicists. Schrodinger used this idea of the dual nature of matter to develop a theory of wave mechanics. By 1927, Davisson and Thomson, working independently were able to demonstrate that electrons could be bent, focused, and diffracted like waves. As a result of this experimental confirmation and for his contribution to quantum mechanics, de Broglie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929. He continued to spend the rest of his life devoted to the study of science.

However, Snelson's interest in the construction of matter has also produced an entirely different line of work on a submicroscopic level: his on-going art work "Portrait of an Atom." These lesser-known investigations into the properties of structure led him to use digital technology years before the official advent of "the age of digital media." His early experiments with 3D visualization and technology have in various respects gained new relevance in the context of today's digital arts - most notably in regard to the now much-discussed relationship between the arts and sciences. Atoms at an Exhibition Snelson's artistic work has always been fueled by scientific interests, particularly those of physics. Based upon the principle of tensegrity, a hybrid of the terms tension and integrity, Snelson's trademark sculptural structures are concerned with the essential forces of nature. They are investigations of the nature of structure and the structure of nature and one of their striking qualities is their structural purity and integrity - results of the intellectual rigor Snelson applies to his work.
