Extractions: Reports coming out of Stockholm, Sweden late Monday confirmed what the American public has known for the past 44 yearsÐ the judging for the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics was tainted. Nobel Institute official Sven Larkenson called the revelations "an embarrassment to the physics guys and their credibility...and I guess our credibility, too." The judge in question, 89 year-old French scholar, Jean-Jacques ("J.J.") Lacroix has been ordered to appear before the United Nations General Assembly for a judicial hearing scheduled Thursday. A team of three Russian physicistsÐ Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov, Il'ja Mikhailovich, and Igor YevgenyevichÐ were awarded the 1958 Nobel Physics Prize for their work in discovering and interpreting "The Cherenkov Effect". However, it was quite obvious to all those following the Nobel Ceremony that the pair of Mikhailovich and Yevgenyevich were nothing more than glorified coffee-fetchers for Cherenkov. The tainted French judge felt pressured to give all three scientists awards, apparently because of an agreement reached between France and Russia in 1956. The deal outlined a conniving scheme to give the three Russians the Physics Prize in exchange for a French victory in the 1957 Literature Prize. And so, the two Russian judges who helped deliver the Nobel Prize for Literature to French writer Albert Camus in 1957, are also coming under fire. Unfortunately, both judges passed away in the late 1970s after extensive battles with Chicken Pox and could not be reached for comment.

Extractions: Information / Personalities The history of the Nobel Prize and the stories of the people who have won it are very interesting, especially in the times when we are entering the new millennium. To what extent are the Nobel Prize winners outstanding in their own generation, pointing the way? This article is dedicated to the history of Nobel Prize in Russia and its Russian winners. Yet Nobel was exceptional, if not unique, in two respects. First, the geographical spread of his complex business pursuits, which were international in an age of active nationalism, made him care little about frontiers; second, there was irony in the fact that his fortune was made from the development of explosives for peaceful purposes, which in our own century are used for both peace and war. During his final years, Nobel developed the idea of creating a prize that would encourage scientific progress, thereby improving the human condition. In his last will and testament dated November 27, 1895, Nobel specified how the portion of his estate to be used for such prizes. In 1895 the third and last will of Alfred Nobel was signed in Paris and in 1896 he died.
