He went straight from his first science degree to a doctorate and then on to a career in scientific research. He began his most famous work on photosynthesis at the end of the Second World War. The story is that on the day the Japanese surrendered after the dropping of the two atom bombs, Earnest Lawrence told the 34 year old Calvin that it was 'time to do something useful' with all the radioactive carbon-14 he had discovered how to make during the war years. Calvin set up a team of young scientists - at 34 he was about the oldest - and for the first time he got together biologists, chemists and physicists who all worked together contributing different skills to the research. Calvin decided to use carbon-14 isotope as a tracer in the reactions of photosynthesis. It was a very difficult process, because the reactions had to be carried out in living cells. The radioactive tracer in the form of labelled carbon dioxide was given to the plants for a brief time. The plant cells were then killed at various intervals after the labelled gas was given and the labelled chemicals identified. It took years, but eventually Calvin and his team mapped the complete route that carbon travels through a plant during photosynthesis, starting from its absorption as atmospheric carbon dioxide to its conversion into carbohydrates and other organic compounds. He was 85. Labeled "Mr. Photosynthesis" by Time magazine in 1961, Calvin was awarded the Nobel Prize for using radioactive carbon-14 to show steps by which plants turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar during photosynthesis. Today this process is known as the "Calvin Cycle" in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants capture energy from the sun. "For many years, Melvin was a vital personality on the Berkeley campus who contributed greatly to science," said UC Berkeley Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien. "It is a sad occasion to lose such a colleague." Calvin, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1961, was a University Professor of Chemistry. Born April 8, 1911, he retired in 1980, but continued his research until recently. His findings sparked the U.S. Department of Energy's interest in solar energy as a source of power.

Melvin and one of his assistants, A. A. Benson, were the first to realize that carbon 14 could not unravel the mystery of photosynthesis. After that in 1948, Calvin and Benson began doing experiments using algae. They created a cycle to explain the process to others and named it The Calvin Cycle. In 1961, Melvin Calvin won a Nobel prize for chemistry. You are probably tired of hearing of Melvin Calvin, so I will tell you about some of the other people who also made photosynthesis famous. Philip Hauge Abelsone made replicas of some of the proteins found in oxygen. In the 1920's, an English biochemist, John B. S. Haldane, pointed out " that if life was responsible for the oxygen in the atmosphere, photosynthesis ought to have started when there was no oxygen in it and carbon dioxide was present instead." R. Emerson and W. Arnold illuminated plant cells with very short flashes of light. Stephen Hales, an English botanist, thought that since plants could give off gasses, it seemed to him they could also take in gasses. Joseph Black was interested in carbon dioxide. I'm still not done with these people yet. Jean Baptiste Boussingault was the first to conduct experiments to study the part that nitrogen played in photosynthesis in 1837. John Dalton named the atoms and then decided that atoms that cling together form molecules. Six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms, and six oxygen atoms is what Rudolf Fittig found in glucose. In 1870, a German chemist, Adolf Baeyer decided photosynthesis should form formaldehyde.
