Utilisant le carbone 14 comme un traceur , Calvin et son ©quipe cartographi¨rent la route compl¨te du carbone   travers une plante pendant la photosynth¨se , commen§ant depuis son absorption comme dioxyde de carbone atmosph©rique   sa conversion en carbohydrates et d'autres compos©s organiques. En faisant cela, le groupe de Calvin montra que la lumi¨re du soleil agit sur la chlorophylle dans une plante pour alimenter la construction des compos©s organiques, plutot que le dioxyde de carbone comme on croyait pr©cedement. Dans ses derni¨res ann©es de recherche active, il ©tudia l'utilisation de plantes productrice de p©trole comme une source d'©nergie renouvelable. Il passa aussi beaucoup d'ann©es essayant l'©volution chimique de la vie et ©crit un livre sur ce sujet publi© en 1969. Il ©tudia aussi la g©ochimie organique , la carcinog©n¨se chimique et l'analyse des rochers lunaires Parmi les nombreuses r©compenses qu'il obtint notons le prix Nobel de chimie en 1961.

He received the B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1931 at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology , and the Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. He was 85. Calvin in his laboratory A member of the faculty at UC Berkeley since 1937, and one of the first chemists to join Ernest O. Lawrence's Radiation Laboratory, Calvin received the 1961 Nobel prize in chemistry for identifying the path of carbon in photosynthesis. Shortly thereafter he established the Chemical Biodynamics Division, the successor to today's Structural Biology Division, which he directed for 20 years. Throughout his distinguished career, Calvin was the recipient of a great many awards and honors, including the National Medal of Science, which he received from President Bush in 1989, the Priestly Medal from the American Chemical Society, the Davy Medal from the Royal Society of London, and the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Chemists. Calvin was born on April 8, 1911 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He earned his undergraduate degrees from the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1931 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. Following post-doctoral studies in England, Calvin was invited to join the UCB faculty by the illustrious chemist Gilbert Lewis who introduced him to Lawrence. According to legend, on the day of the Japanese surrender, Lawrence told Calvin that "Now is the time to do something useful with radioactive carbon," the isotope of carbon that had been discovered in 1940 at the 60-Inch Cyclotron. In response, Calvin organized a team of Rad Lab researchers to study photosynthesis the process by which green plants convert sunlight energy into chemical energy.

Using carbon-14 as a tracer, Calvin and his team mapped the complete route that carbon takes through a plant. In doing so, he showed that sunlight acts on chlorophyll to fuel the manufacture of organic compounds, rather than on carbon dioxide as had been previously believed. In 1950, Calvin and his associates began pioneering experiments in prebiotic evolution by irradiating a solution of carbon dioxide and water vapor with ionizing radiation from a cyclotron. Simple organic chemicals, including formic acid and formaldehyde were produced - though not amino acids as in the Miller-Urey Experiment , carried out three years later. Calvin's work on prebiotic evolution encouraged him to believe that such processes may have occurred elsewhere in the solar system and on many extrasolar worlds. In 1958, Calvin was appointed chairman of Panel 2 on Extraterrestrial Life , assembled to consider the problems of contamination by spacecraft. It was his opinion that:
