Extractions: Printer-Friendly Version In 1954, the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education dramatically changed American society. "What I Tell My Child About Color" James W. May, Assistant Professor, School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta My wife, as usual more alert to the subtleties of emotional tension, helped us both by changing the subject. So began our discussion of color almost two years ago. Today, we encourage discussion, on the level Jamie can manage. Our concern is to keep him from embracing uncritically the familiar rationalizations based on color. Some we by-pass. Some we discuss. It was well to remind him; but we were close to argument, and argument, we should have known, does not help. Jamie was prepared to surrender, but not yet with conviction. So I did not press the point. Our own attitudes tell more than our moral lectures. We do want him to be spared some of the emotional excess baggage we have lugged about. But we do not have all the answers. We want him to learn to find answers for himself. Jamie, now a seven-year-old, learns about people and issues from the feelings we express. He appreciates the people that we appreciate. This is where he gets his principles of sportsmanship and citizenship. Of course, the ideas and phrases that Jamie picks up from his playmates are just as superficial as his pontifications on jet planes and Navy frogmen. Yet there is a difference. Whereas his everyday experiences will correct many of these other misconceptions, he has no normal contacts to correct his prejudices about color.

Extractions: Sir James MacKintosh MACKINTOSH, (SIR) JAMES, a distinguished historian and statesman, was born on the 24th of October, 1765, at Alldowrie, the residence of his grandmother, situated on the banks of Loch Ness, about seven miles from Inverness. He was in his own person, being the eldest of three children, the representative of the Killochy branch of the family of Mackintosh, (a property which they acquired in the fifteenth century.) and was the eleventh in descent from Allan, third son of Malcolm, the tenth chief of the clan, who was one of the leaders in the celebrated battle of Harlaw, fought in 1411. The lairds of Killochy, as the eldest branch of the Mackintoshes extant, were always captains of the watch (a feudal military appointment) to the chief of the clan, and acted in this capacity in all the hostilities in which he happened to be engaged. John Mackintosh of Killochy, father to the subject of this memoir, held a commission for several years in Campbell’s Highlanders, and was wounded in the Seven Years’ War in Germany. He was afterwards a captain in the 68th regiment, and served with this corps for a considerable time in Gibraltar, and other places abroad. He was a man of amiable manners and disposition, and much esteemed by all who knew him, amongst the most remarkable of whom was major Mercer, the author of a volume of pleasing poetry, who thus speaks of him, sixteen years after his death, in a letter to lord Glenbervie:—"We lived together," says this gentleman, "for two years in the same tent, without one unkind word or look. John Mackintosh was one of the liveliest, most good-humoured, gallant lads I ever knew."
Black Fur Traders And Frontiersmen sir james Douglas of the Hudson s Bay Company was reputed james Beckwourth acted asa trader for the American black fur trade entrepreneurs were not an unusual http://www.coax.net/people/lwf/furtrade.htm
Extractions: Fort Laramie, Wyoming Blacks held positions in the fur trade ranging from slave to free trappers and from camp keeper to independent entrepreneur. Slavery was still legal in the United States during the fur trade era and numerous traders and fur company principals utilized slaves to help create their fur trade empires. William Clark's slave, York, who apparently never had any other name, accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition across the continent and back. While the men of the expedition were said to have worked well, it was also said by one of the two leaders of the expedition that the only two who could be relied on to do as they were told were York and the Newfoundland dog, Scammon. Fur trade narratives often mentioned black slaves. A black man named Reese who was a servant to Francis A. Cardon was killed by members of the Blood band of the Blackfoot tribe at Fort Chardon on the Mouth of the Judith River. The killing took place in 1842 or 1843 according to Elliott Coues, but Charles Larpenteur remembered the event taking place during the winter of 1844-1845. Chardon made public his vow to revenge Reese's death. It is not known what job Reese held but it is fairly safe to say that in that part of the west in the 1840's it may have had something to do with the fur trade.

Extractions: (from the DNB Sir James Young Simpson, physician, born on 7 June 1811 at Bathgate, Linlothgowshire, was youngest of seven sons of the village baker, David ( d. 1830), fourth son of Alexander Simpson. Both father and mother, Mary Jervie, came of shrewd yeoman-farmer stock. The latter was of Huguenot descent. At four James went to the local school. Proud of his early aptitude at lessons, his father and brothers (his mother died when he was nine) agreed to stint themselves to give him a college career. He entered the arts classes of Edinburgh University in 1825 at fourteen, 'very, very young, very solitary,' he said forty years later, when receiving the freedom of the city of Edinburgh. He began his medical studies in 1827, and graduated M.D. in 1832. His abilities were at once recognised, and he was made senior president of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh in 1835. In 1839 he was appointed to the midwifery chair there, although he was only twenty-eight years old. Thenceforth his practice grew rapidly. In 1847 he was appointed one of her majesty's physicians for Scotland; and he became a foreign associate of the Academy of Medicine, Paris, the members firmly insisting on his election against the rules of the commission which had omitted his name. In 1856 he was awarded by the French Academy of Sciences the Monthyon prize of two thousand francs for 'most important benefits done to humanity.' He received the order of St. Olaf from the king of Sweden, and became a member of nearly every medical society in Europe and America. In 1866 he was made D.C.L. of Oxford, and in the same year (3 Feb.) received a baronetcy, the first given to a doctor practising in Scotland.
